
U-18 Caps earn tie at soccer nationals

The Fredericton U-18 Canadian Tire Caps battled St. John's Misubishi Capitals of Newfoundland to a 1-1 tie in Sony Cup national soccer championship action in Vaughan, Ont. Friday.
Goaltender Luke Olmstead excelled for the Canadian Tire Caps, who were badly outplayed in the first half but trailed by only one, as Aaron Anstey of St. John's scored on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute.
The Caps might easily have tied it, as a counter attack just before halftime saw Franki Daddurno hit the underside of the bar following a cross from Jason Rouse. Rory Keys connected in thee 65th minute for the Canadian Tire Caps, converting an Amir Razack free kick from the right. The Caps play Halifax County today at 11 a.m. Atlantic and conclude round robin play Sunday against PEI Winsloe Blues.
Friday was an off day at the Adidas Cup U-16 tournament in Sydney, N.S.
The Clark Toyota Caps U-16 girls team, 0-2 at the tournament after a pair of 2-0 losses to the Phoenix Soccer Club of Winnipeg, Man. and the Burlington Sting of Ontario, respectively, complete round robin play today at 3:30 p.m. against the Yellowknife Diamond Drillers.
The Canadian Tire Caps U-16 boys team, also 0-2 after a 22-0 loss to Saskatchewan to start and a 4-0 loss to Alberta, complete the round robin tonight at 7 p.m. against Cape Breton Selects of Nova Scotia.
Junior varsity boys
Fredericton High School Junior Varsity Saturn Caps earned the top seed at next week's Southwest regional high school junior varsity soccer championship in Saint John after a 2-1 victory over Thomas Albert Richilieu Elite of Grand Falls. Blake Wilson and Josh LeBrun had the goals for the Caps.
