Why rampant divorce rates are everyone's business

Those concerned with society's ongoing laissez faire attitude towards marriage and the skyrocketing divorce rate are often blown off that it's none of their business.

Turns out it is very much everyone's business and governments would be wise to do what they reasonably can to ensure strong marriages.

As I've written here a few times before, there are three things you can do to greatly reduce your risk of living in poverty. 1. ) Finish high school, 2) Marry before having a child, and 3) Don't have a child until you're at least 20. Sound advice our schools should be teaching. #1 they seem capable of but 2 and 3 scare educators as politically incorrect. Too bad. The truth may not be pretty but sometime it needs to be said.

I don't think arguing the supposed cost of divorce to tax payers is in and of itself much of a compelling argument to call for government to do what you suggest "do what they reasonably can to ensure strong marriages." It sounds too much like arguing if all else fails talk dollars. To be fair the U.S. report was a study on "Divorce and out-of-wedlock childbearing" not just divorce and was sponsored by organizations that describe themselves as being part of a "marriage movement". Not exactly unbiased. But none the less I think you have a point when suggesting that education should be the key....as long as its done right and there lies the rub. I don't think it has anything to do with political correctness but the hue and cry from certain organizations when the government and educators start talking curriculum and it isn't just what some want to hear. I agree that something needs to be said but I am betting that odds are we wouldn't agree on what that is....and that is the real problem.

Item's #2 and #3, well the parents should be playing the most important role. But all too often, the parents are idiots and hence go the kids making bad decisions. We expect the educational system to rectify the situation. Not going to work.

I think it is just a natural erosion of our western society, we are going to hell in a handbasket. High divorce rates are just one aspect of the many troubles facing us.

Yah for Canuck Guy. Give that man a perfect score. He got it right.
Now, if we could just get enough parents to care enough to be parents instead of one of those people who pay the babysitter, daycare worker and the teacher to raise their kids.
