The Moncton Times and Transcript, New Brunswick’s National Enquirer?

I’m no great fan of the Moncton Times and Transcript (yes I know this blog runs on the T and T’s website). Back in 2006 two components of the T and T made my “10 people who are screwing up New Brunswick” list.

While their reporting is generally pretty good and fair as are a number of columns(my fellow blogger Brian Cormier comes to mind), the editorials often come across as vindictive and just as often out of touch. There’s a reason so many of their editorials regardless of how long they beat the drum fail to resonate with the public. The public by and large simply doesn’t think the same way as the top offices of the T and T.

I was reminded of this fact again this past weekend while reading the Sleuth which contained this.

“Perhaps our sterling crop of MLAs and cabinet ministers do need a pay raise.

Why else would a certain former cabinet minister and current member of the legislature be seen shopping the other day at
ValueVillage?”

What the heck does that even mean? ValueVillage is a business that appeals to a wide variety of people with three locations in New Brunswick . Yet the masterminds at the T and T have just told all their readers that if you shop there you must be hard on your luck. (The Sales Dept. at the T and T should be cringing right now).

I’m convinced the T and T does this kind of stuff purely for shock value. That or they’re completely out of touch and could use some fresh blood and fresh thinking at the editorial stage.

On a more positive note still over at CanadaEast, Robin Hills et al have done a fine job giving the version of Spink About It there a facelift. Still not officially launched but they’re offering the public a sneak peek at the new look of the CanadaEast site. They’ve captured the fine look and feel Ian at Late Night did to Spink About It a year ago.

You may also notice the CanadaEast version is no longer called Spinks from the Right. They have been unable to find a left-minded blogger to fill the gap left by NB Politico so I suggested scrapping the former name in favour of my main blog’s title. They agreed so that’s that.

By the way blogging may be a little light over the next few days although kit has indicated he may jump in with some guest blogs.

Oh and please feel free to continue to shop at Value Village. The T and T might think less of you but really who cares?

There is something lacking at the T & T, at least at the editorial level. That I actually agree with you spinks just shows how poor a job they are doing. Most papers at least have a somewhat distinct lean to them that will guarantee at least a certain number of satisfied customers. It is quite a distinction to have an editorial staff capable of rubbing everyone.the wrong way.....Geez spinks...just had a thought...you don't suppose that is an example of that non-bias reporting do you?

Value Village is used clothing. If you are buying used clothing, then you are down on your luck or you might be from New Brunswick. Same thing if you eat at a food bank.

People give away their clothes in Boston and expect that homeless/poor people will receive it.

Instead, it gets sold to NB'ers by Value Village (they buy clothese at bulk rates!). To me, that is pretty sleazy.

I think it is safe to say that anony1:21 you have never spent much time in a Value Village, otherwise you would know better than to suggest only "down on your luck" people shop there or that these are cast off from Boston...(why Boston by the way..Toronto clothing not good enough?) There are people of all stripes and social economic backgrounds that visit these stores regularly...(there are over 200 here in Canada and the United States and even a few in Australia by the way) It is true that they buy in bulk, but unlike most stores they also buy from non-profit organizations. Even you could drop off some of your excess clothes that no longer seem to fit or that tie you got for your birthday but would never be caught dead wearing or any of the many things we all thought we absolutely needed but in fact rarely if ever used and a percentage of that would go to local non profit groups. Of course it is a business and meant to make money but unlike some they do give back, How sleazy is that?

Elitist social attitudes do nothing but contribute to what's wrong with our society. Am I down on my luck because I choose to drive a used car instead of zipping around town like an A-hole in a brand new BMW with one of those ridiculous Bluetooth devices attached to my head? No...I'm simply not an A-hole. Why must we criticize and pigeonhole based on what clothes someone wears, where they shop, what they drive, how big their house is, etc.? (Yes, I'm aware I just did the same thing with the hypothetical "guy in a BMW". It's called irony. But come on, it's true, and if you're one of those guys you deserve to know what the rest of us think of you).

I get most of my clothes at Frenchy's, and some come from Value Village. Does that mean I'm down on my luck? I don't believe I've ever been considered to be in that category. If I can get a nice outfit for $10 at Value Village, and the same outfit at, I don't know, The Gap, for $100, I'd rather pay $10. It's all about saving money, and most people that do shop in second hand store do it to save money. And anyway, paying $100 for a pair of jeans that would last me 6 months just because I can afford it (did it when I was a clueless kid with mom and dad's money) just makes no sense whatsoever.
