Will they let him take his skateboard to jail?

From the weird story files, one can really see this from all sides. Here's a guy who at least claims he's responsible on the road with his skateboard, looking both ways, using hand signals and unlike a great number of his skateboarding colleagues (cyclists too) actually wears a helmet for his own safety.

The law in Fredericton though says you can't ride your skateboard on city streets along with a number of other things like sleds (imagine how quick you could get down the Regent Street hill in the winter though).

Lee Breen pleaded guilty but won't pay the $100 fine so the alternative is he spends 5 days in the clink which he prefers to do.

I see the guy's point to a degree but the law applies to all. Just last week I observed a skateboarder just about get nailed by traffic numerous times weaving in and around cars. It's just not safe for anybody and if Lee is let off, the roads become a free for all. When you're on a piece of wood with four little wheels weaving in and around traffic, you're difficult for motorists to see.

Unfair for skateboarders? Perhaps but so is ending up a smear on the road. Short of building an infrastructure just for skateboards, this law needs to be upheld. Sorry Lee, but if you're going to continue to flip off this law and not pay the penalty, figure out what the comfy cell is because you're going to be a return visitor.

Just last week I observed a pedestrian just about get nailed by traffic numerous times jaywalking in and around cars. It's just not safe for anybody and if that person gets let off, the roads become a free for all. When you're in sneakers crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, you're difficult for motorists to see.

Jaywalking is also illegal, by the way.

Oh, so we can distinguish between responsible and irresponsible walking on our streets (along with driving, motorcycling, bicycling, etc...), but ALL skateboarding on the streets should be illegal? Gotcha.

i think its stupid how people rallied for him not to go to jail. if i had to pay a fine for speeding id either have to pay it or serve jail time, its as simple as that, he didnt pay it (or want to pay it) so he went to jail instead and of course clueless people are saying "Hes going to jail for skateboarding" hes not going to jail for skateboarding, hes going to jail because he refused to pay a fine. law is the law, we all have to abide by it. so that demonstration was really a bunch of people who had no clue what they were doing. i think its stupid how they were supporting him, would you support a drunk driver who refused to pay his fine and opted to do the jail time instead?? DIDNT THINK SO

You disagree with the 'no skating' bylaw, then do something about it. Lobby city hall, talk to your counsellor, form a group and approach city staff and the media, start an awareness campaign. You can't simply ignore the law, ignore the police warnings, ignore the fine, ignore the court ordered fine, and expect to get away with it. That attitude is juvenile.
