Seniors in Hartland hope to return home soon
Seniors displaced from a nursing home in Hartland following a suppertime fire Wednesday could be back in the facility by this weekend.
Thirty residents of the Central Carleton Nursing Home were evacuated after a fire broke out in the home's laundry room at around 5:30 p.m. There were no injuries, but six residents were taken to hospital as a precaution because of their age or medical conditions and the remaining 24 to the nearby New Brunswick Bible Institute.
The blaze was quickly contained by the Hartland Fire Department, but other parts of the facility suffered smoke damage.
Hartland fire Chief Mike Walton said the sprinkler system saved the day.
Walton praised the efforts of both the Red Cross for helping with the evacuation and the Bible Institute for providing shelter to the residents.
"They were very efficient and did what needed to be done," Walton said.
Officials are continuing with repairs and cleanup at the facility, he said, and residents could back in the home either today or Saturday.
Free Comic Book Day rescheduled for Saturday
Bullets and bad guys couldn't stop Iron Man, but flooding in Fredericton threatened to rust out the armored hero for a downtown giveaway event.
Free Comic Book Day had been scheduled at Strange Adventures, a comic-book shop in downtown Fredericton on May 3, but due to the recent flood, power was cut off to the block on which the store is located.
The store will give away free comics Saturday, including Superman and X-Men titles.
City begins task of repairing potholes
The battle of the pothole has begun.
Asphalt plants are open and the city's public works crews have begun their annual rite of spring - pothole repairs.
If you know of a pothole you would like to see repaired, you can report it to the city at 460-2038.
"We had a tough winter and it has taken a toll on city streets," said Sean Lee, manager of the city's roads and streets division. "We have a lot of potholes and water-break trenches and now we have access to hot asphalt. We are getting to work on them."
The city's focus will initially be on repairing water-break trenches and large potholes on main roads in the city, followed by all other potholes and road surface cracks.
"People should expect to see an improvement in the next two to three weeks," Lee said.
