New Maryland Mayor Frank Dunn presented seven village residents with New Brunswick Day merit awards during a ceremony held Wednesday night.

The awards, which recognize achievement in arts and culture, business community leadership, environment, recreation, and volunteer service were given to: Bill O'Donnell, a former village councillor; Dr. Carolyn Barry, a recently retired doctor; Tina McDermaid, a recreation department volunteer; Frank Brown, a former village councillor; Dr. Sidney Grant, a doctor who helped establish the palliative care unit at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital; Darrell Amos, a longtime volunteer; and Martin's Green Thumb Nursery.

"We are so fortunate to have the number of great volunteers we have," Dunn said.

"It is a small community, but it seems like everyone steps up when we need them and these people here tonight are proof of that."
