Another laurel for Fredericton

Fredericton has been named the fourth best city for families in Canada by author and newspaper columnist Richard Florida, director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management.

In his latest book, Who's Your City?, Florida researched the best places to live in Canada based on five demographic groups: singles, mid-career, family, empty-nester and retiree.

In the families category, Fredericton finished fourth behind Ottawa-Gatineau, Toronto and Calgary. No other New Brunswick city made the top 10 in any category.

"It's another feather in our cap to be recognized as one of Canada's top family friendly cities," said Mayor Brad Woodside in a news release issued Thursday.

"It's always special to be recognized for the enviable quality of life we enjoy in our community."

Florida considered the percentage of a city's population that fits a particular life stage, the underlying economic conditions, amenities and quality of life factors such as arts and culture, and the cost of living.

Calgary was rated the best place for singles, with Toronto topping the empty-nester category. Ottawa-Gatineau ranked at the top for mid-career, families and retirees.

"fourth best city for families in Canada" LOL...

Who paid this guy off!
I have two boys and we go to Moncton, St. John, P.E.I., and Halifax regularly, to enjoy; air shows, buskers, amusement parks, real beaches, concerts, and shopping.

The 10 minute long Canada Day "Green Parade", real blast! We now go to P.E.I'S 2 hour Old Home Week Parade.

We do play minor football and soccer on the worst fields I've ever seen, the has city done nothing to make them any better.

Kevin D - sounds like you (and we) are ready for you to move to P.E.I. We're really going to miss you and your optimism ;-)

Anonymous99 - Its realism! I’m am from PEI and would love to move back. Unfortunately I’m stuck here with morons like you.
Do you have any comments on the story? No! You’re the type that criticizes other people’s comments.

I think a comment that suggests if you were to leave is relative Kevin. After all one less dissatisfied resident resident will only improve the cities changes of moving higher in next years poll. I guess it is safe to say that that the majority of citizens (or morons as you like to call them)do not rate Canada Day parades and soccer fields as highly when measuring what is best for families.

Kevin D - You must be a treat to spend time with.

As for the story, I agree with the author. I really enjoy living in Fredericton and am not surprised by our ranking. It's a wonderful place to raise my children. There is a lot to offer families here. But, we always have folks like you who make generalizing statements about an entire city's population based on one situation - your own. Unlike you, the author surely surveyed more than one family in his research.
Is Fredericton perfect, no. Is PEI? Nope. But you offer no suggestions to improve Fredericton - you just crap on the city and call everyone who likes it names. Why don't you use that pent-up frustration and offer something that we can actually use to improve this city?
