Vandals target Oromocto animal shelter
Published Saturday November 1st, 2008

An act of vandalism will cost the struggling Oromocto and Area SPCA at least $300 to replace two windows at its new facility, still under construction.
Sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, a person or persons threw rocks and badly damaged two new windows at the SPCA's $200,000 building under construction at 111 d'Amours St.
The 16.8-metre by nine-metre (56-foot by 30-foot) building will be about twice the size of the current SPCA in Oromocto.
The larger facility is being constructed by personnel from the 4 Engineers Support Regiment at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown as part of a practical work assignment for its tradespeople.
"We went last night (Thursday) to tour the building and see where we're at," said shelter manager Tracy Marcotullio.
The damage wouldn't be welcomed at any time, but is especially problematic when you're paying bills in two places.
"Now we have to take more money to replace these windows when we're already struggling to build the new building and keep this one going," Marcotullio said.
"That's money we end up not having to spend on the animals when you're struggling to care for hundreds of homeless animals and paying medical bills and you're also trying to building a new building. That's a lot of money to us."
The vandalism has been reported to RCMP for investigation.
The shelter has 30 animals under its roof.
However, others are in foster care and are still in need of permanent homes.
If you can provide assistance or can adopt a pet, contact the Oromocto SPCA at 446-4107.
