Cadets get lesson on how to survive in the woods

That was the focus recently as about 60 young adults from Fredericton's 333 and Oromocto's 334 Air Cadet squadrons gathered for a combined fall survival weekend at the Argonaut Army Cadet Summer Training Center at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown.
The session, held Oct. 24-27, was part of the yearly cadet training schedule.
During the weekend, younger cadets learned basic techniques on how to survive in the woods, while older cadets practised the leadership and teaching skills developed within the air cadet training program.
Sessions included learning about making fires, setting snares, building shelters and map and compass training. The cadets also participated in various skill-building competitions designed to put theory into practice.
"Young people enjoy these opportunities to develop practical skills outside of the traditional school room environment," said Capt. Fred Clancy, commanding officer of Oromocto's 334 Air Cadet Squadron.
