Bus company mulls move up the hill

Location | Acadian Coach Lines off to Woodside Lane?

A1

It's not its first choice, but moving to 150 Woodside Lane is an option for Acadian Coach Lines, which is living on borrowed time at its downtown location.

After 23 years at the corner of Regent and Brunswick streets, the company is being evicted from its home.

Its landlord has handed the company a notice to vacate as of April 1, and has tolerated them over-staying their lease temporarily.

The landlord intends to redevelop the site.

"We would love to be downtown, but we just can't find accommodations downtown," said Linda Canney, the company's territory manager for the Fredericton area.

At the city's planning advisory committee meeting Wednesday, approval was given to Moncton-based Acadian Coach Lines' business to be permitted within the highway commercial zone on Woodside Lane.

United Rentals has offered to become the bus company's landlord and can reconfigure its building to create the 335 square metres of space needed for the administrative office, customer seating area, ticket sales location and storage for parcels.

The operation employs three customer sales representatives and a manager.

Although the proposed location off Hanwell Road is less convenient for customers than the downtown area, Canney said 90 per cent of bus passengers come by cab or are dropped off at the bus station because they have luggage.

"They don't travel light," Canney said.

Planning advisory committee member Alan Raynor said the former York Street train station property might be expensive to redevelop, but it would be a choice location for the bus system.

"Would the (Acadian Coach) Lines consider a location, as time permits, probably a little more desirable than this? I assume they would. They're trying to serve their customers," Raynor asked.

"We certainly would," Canney said. "We have been looking for the past five years. There's just no location downtown where we can accommodate our buses, per se. A terminal isn't the issue. It's space for our (buses)."

City council will get the final say on the zoning change needed to allow Acadian Coach Lines to sub-lease from United Rentals.

A new driveway to the property would be located on Serenity Lane with parking for four buses.

The bus terminal would operate from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. During the day, there will also be additional travel to and from the area for the courier service, which also operates from Acadian Coach Lines' office.

Fleet maintenance and repair of buses is done in Moncton.

Lance Mountain, you forgot to add "long time reader, first time responder". You don't think this has anything to do with the city and its decision makers? I'm not as naive as you are. If the city and its decision makers felt having a bus station downtown was important then the private business would have had no problem finding a spot downtown or a helluva lot more convenient than Hanwell. You may think that things happen as they do between private enterprises without government help/interference, but you'd be somewhat wrong. Maybe I'm wrong. Who cares anyway? We're just here for the free vent. For the record, I have neither uttered, nor typed the phrase "stodgy old Fredericton" until now.

I do see a problem with their current location. It's a dangerous spot for the buses to exit from. I've seen people walk out onto Regent Street to stop traffic to allow the buses to back out into the street.

I'm guessing the new location might have more parking, which would be more convenient than where they are and perhaps more people could leave their vehicles there overnight and take the bus somewhere for the weekend as people can do at the airport.

It's about time they did something with the current location, it has looked like a dump and so delapitated for so long. I don't think the location should be so much of an issue, people are going to have to travel no matter where it is located. At the current location, it may be more convenient for university students, because it's pretty close to campus, but then again, if it's moved to Woodside Lane - what difference does it make? It will just then become more convenient for the people that it was inconvenient for on Regent. I think if there are improvements are made to parking, and just all around more space in the parking lot, that will be a huge bonus. People are still going to travel by bus, no matter where in Fredericton they put it.

The present location has been there as long as I can remember, but I agree with others that it just isn't suitable any longer. I like the two suggestions, one of the lot and old building by the legion. The building looks bad and that would be a good access location for the downtown area. The other suggestion of the York St station area sounds good, especially if portable buildings could be used until the old station be refurbished, if there's enough left of it to do so. Otherwise tear it down and build a modern terminal. Off the Hanwell is is just too far out of the way.

My thoughts - if the city is willing to rezone an area completely inaccessible then they should be willing and able to rezone a place downtown for the bus station. Someone mention that empty grocery store by the legion - that place would be perfect.

what is wrong with this city!?

I think the city is going to be surprised at how angry this is going to make people. They should just nip all of this controversy in the bud and rezone that grocery store right now and save everyone a giant headache.

Everybody want the bus company downtown.....but you guys doesn't know why they moving up hill?

The town of Fredericton doesn't want to change the zoning....so the bus company have NO CHOICE to move up hill..

Blame the town council..not the bus company...

I'm agree the old train station would been a perfect place...
