The entries in this year's Canada Day parade were as diverse as the people who call Canada home.

Happy birthday, Canada: Monica Legere is dressed for Canada's birthday. She was out at officers square along with thousands of other people to participate in Canada Day activities. There was a variety of entertainment, food and a parade later in the afternoon. Fireworks were held at night.

Local artist William Forrestall said the parade was the whole that added up to more than the sum of its vibrantly varied parts.

And that's not unlike his folk art entries: two homemade go-karts built by himself and his daughters that were driven by family friends Sophie Theriault and Naomi Petrie.

"Canada is an ongoing creative exercise," Forrestall said. "It's not just a bunch of laws or legislation, it's all kinds of ideas and values coming together freely, and that's why it's important to be out here celebrating."

Nearly 10,000 Frederictonians took part in that celebration, gathering at the Civic Pride block party at noon for live music, before heading to St. Anne Point Boulevard for the parade.

The day was overcast and muggy, but the rain held off and Fredericton Civic Pride co-chairman Charles Barry said the weather wasn't a big concern.

"It was deadly hot last year, the sun made it uncomfortable," he said. "It could be a bit clearer today, but temperature-wise it's much better."

He said it would take much more than a chance of rain to dampen Fredericton's spirits on Canada Day.

"Having the community out like this on Canada Day shows how we care for each other and the freedom we want to keep."

Timothy Li, who was at the front of the line carrying a colourful Chinese dragon, agreed.

"It's not just the diversity, we're here to celebrate our shared vision," he said.

"That's why we brought the dragon, a big part of Chinese New Year, and we wanted to share it with you on Canada Day and show good love and prosperity."

Derek Davidson, a local artist who was part of the block party's Paint the Town Green, said cultural eclecticism was a huge inspiration as he painted a portrait of the crowd in Officers Square.

"I depend on these people to paint them, they depend on each other in countless ways," he said. "That's why we're here, in this country, and here today, to cherish that interdependence."

Forrestall agreed, saying his go-kart creations - and contributions from several fellow Gallery 78 members in the parade - are small examples of how all Canadians have turned nation building and cultural nourishing into an art form all of its own.

"We literally write the book every day in this country," he said. "And when we celebrate Canada Day, it's just another way we turn our best intentions into new creations."

My kids and I loved the dragon in the parade :) It brought some action and excitment to it. I personally find our parades pretty boring with only a few enthusiastic participants here and there. I have yet to go home and say *wow, that was awesome this year*. Also liked the guy shooting tshirts into the crowd LOL - great idea!!

Parade? I think you mean the Canada Day March. You're right, it's pretty boring. There is absolutely NOTHING in it to get people excited! NOTHING!!! What is so great and wonderful about seeing different groups of people walking down a street?? The most exciting part of the parade for me was the discovery of a gorgeous golden puppy just a few people away that easily pulled my focus from the monotony of it all.
And to add to the farce, one of the Civic Pride co-chairs spoke on the radio this morning and was actually quoted as saying the parade was "quite a success" from the sheer number of participants involved. Well again ... the number of people who decide to walk for 20-30 minutes is NOT a measure of it's success by ANY MEANS. Success should be measured by how many people leave with a sense of excitement and "WOW"! How many Frederictonians can say that??!

This "wonderful" and "innovative" GREEN Parade idea is downright pathetic. Think of something different for next year!

You know Lisa... organizing such an event as a parade takes lots of time and commitment. It is all done by volunteers. This is just a suggestion but... Instead of complaining.. why dont' you offer your assistance.

Remember when the parade had horses, and cars, and Semi's pulling floats and we actually enjoyed it! Yeah the green parade blows. And dont' get me started on the fire works show that was supposed to "be way better than last year".

Little Ole Me ... I'm sure it does take a lot of time and commitment. I'm not disputing that in any way. What I am saying is this ... for all that time and commitment - HAVE SOMETHING TO SHOW FOR IT!! The quality of the parade is a reflection of the time and commitment!!!

Again ... try something different next year.

I found the parade to be much better than last year, although they need to bring back the floats! I was glad to see more entries in the parade, with a couple of church groups, the UNB Reds and of course the Multi-Cultural Association was even better than last year. However, we found it very inappropriate that their were a couple of politically controversial entries: the one for the mid-wives and the on for keeping the bus downtown. They should NOT have been allowed. The Canada Day Parade also needs to focus on celebrating CANADA and what we are about. We left wondering why there was very little emphasis about what the day was supposed to be about...our wonderful country! Not one entry had anything about it being Canada's birthday. That is pretty pathetic. Get back to the days of the floats, take the controversial entries out and bring the floats back! Make the theme of next year's parade "Happy Birthday, Canada"!

We really enjoyed the fireworks this year. We did find the ending very abrupt...no big, flashy finale like they usually had! Overall, though, we really enjoyed them. Thanks, Remax, for providing the funding for the much-improved firework shows over the last several years!

I like the midwives...it was cute! It's people like "A Reader" who prevent the parade from being great beacause they turn every little thing into a major controversy! As for diversity...where? It certainly wasn't any Toronto Pride parade!

I agree with keeping controversial issues out of the parade - what's the point? It is a parade to celebrate Canada - not protest for a cause you believe in. Doesn't matter what group wants to be in the parade - as long as the only motive is to celebrate - not try to sway people with posters....

I'm doing better than that Maritime Boy ... we're heading over to Charlottetown for a REAL PARADE - one that takes approximately 90 minutes (that's 70 minutes longer than Fredericton)!
