A man who decided to swim across the St. John River on Tuesday raised alarm bells for rescuers who received a telephone call from a concerned citizen worried that the man was in distress.

This unidentified swimmer is shadowed by the Fredericton Fire Department’s rescue team Tuesday afternoon. The swimmer was thought to be in trouble but he was wearing a wet suit and practising surfing for an upcoming trip to California.

But it turns out he was just trying to get into shape for a California vacation that will include surfing.

The man, annoyed by the public attention, shrugged off requests to chat with The Daily Gleaner after he emerged from the river in a wetsuit.

He hauled his surfboard up onto the floating docks behind the Fredericton Small Craft Aquatic Centre near the Smythe Street and Woodstock Road intersection.

Two police officers greeted him by the dock and suggested that if he wants to swim in the chilly waters of the river in the future, a courtesy call to police would be in order.

No charges were warranted since he hadn't broken any laws, said police force spokesman Cpl. Randy Reilly on Tuesday.

Firefighters launched their rescue boat, but the adult male swam from the Cityview Avenue area on the north side back to the south side under his own steam.

The unidentified man loaded his surfboard and took off after a crowd of onlookers had gathered at the shoreline on the south side of the riverbank to watch his progress.

Well I can see why they would go and check it out...a bit odd to swim in that area. Not something you see everyday.

Better to be safe then sorry. If the concerned citizen hadn't called, and the swimmer was in distress, people would be saying "MY God, why didn't anyone call for help for him"... sometimes you're damned if you do,and damned if you don't. This swimmer maybe next time, could let authorities know that he is going to do something like this, just so it won't cause any problems in the future. It's not every day you see someone with a surf board in the SJ river, surfing really isn't a popular sport here in Fredericton, there aren't even any waves that can compare to the ocean's.

Canada ... used to be a country where people were expected to be hardy and adventurous. Nowadays? Not so much.

Because most swimmers in distress carry a surf board and wet suit.

Ever think whom ever called could not see the surf board? I think if I saw someone in the river this time of year I would question it too. Don't be so critical.

a similar thing happened to me in victoria bc. i was a navy rescue diver and long distance ocean swimming in a wet suit was part of our physical fitness training. one saturday i swam out to the buoys about 2km off shore and was just catching my breath to head back in. someone called the CG. when they came i just told them i was not in trouble and was going to continue with my swim. even though they did not want me to. i guess it is better to be safe than sorry. of course there are those who claim distress when it is not really one. i was on hmcs huron going thru the georgia straight to vancouver. i was standing on the port side mid-ship when a guy lit off a flair right beside us. we went immediately to emergency stations. as rescue swimmer i went over on the RHIB to find out what was wrong. he was out of gas. very annoyed we told him we would let the CG know...we did NOT give him any fuel.

I do not see the big deal from a concern citizen calling 911 on this sort of thing. However, regarding the police..that a citizen should ask permission or whatever is pathetic. The only thing the police should said the this guy is "hello how was the workout!". Nothing wrong with taking a board out and paddling it around, it is great exercise to the upper body. A dry suit makes practical sense with our climate, however, your hands and face will still be cold.
