* For men, the highest rates of four common cancers (lung, prostate, colorectal, bladder) were in Dalhousie. Minto had the next highest, then Harvey and Saint John.

* For women, the highest rates of three common cancers (lung, breast, colorectal) were found in Minto. Dalhousie and Bathurst ranked second. Saint John and Upper Miramichi ranked third.

* Female lung and colorectal cancers in Minto were more than double the New Brunswick average.

* Female bladder cancer rates in Minto were between 75-99 per cent higher than the provincial average; male bladder cancer rates in Minto were between 50-74 per cent higher. The Canadian Cancer Society lists exposure to certain industrial chemicals such as arsenic or dyes as a major risk factor for developing bladder cancer.

* Male prostate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer rates in Harvey were between 50-74 per cent above the New Brunswick average.
