N.B. girl sentenced for sex offences

MONCTON - Of all the sex offenders Judge Michael McKee has dealt with during his years on the bench, the 13-year-old girl in his courtroom Wednesday truly didn't fit the stereotype.

The girl, who can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was in court for sexual offences committed against a three-year-old girl she was babysitting.

The Moncton teen had earlier pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation and inviting a person under the age of 14 to touch her sexually.

McKee sentenced her to 18 months probation with orders to keep the peace, report to her probation officer and attend a sexual health clinic for counselling and treatment.

The judge said his goal was to try to impose a therapeutic sentence to get the girl help.

A pre-sentence report had been prepared on the defendant and the court heard there was nothing out of the ordinary about the girl. Besides missing too much school, she had no behavioural issues and didn't get into trouble.

The incident took place last October when the girl was babysitting a neighbour's daughter. They were alone at the babysitter's residence watching TV when the older girl asked the younger one to perform a sexual act on her.

Later they were in the bedroom, watching cartoons, when the babysitter removed her underwear and asked the young girl to touch her, which she did.

The Crown said at no time did the babysitter touch the young girl sexually.

The victim later told her parents what happened and police were contacted.

I was raised to believe that vigilantism was never the answer, but in light of this ridiculios sentence, I am begining to rethink my believes. it is a very sad day when the justice system is as sick as the offenders. we now have to look over our shoulders, because apparently the law has given young people a pass to commit crime. Who can we trust?

Punishment alone wouldn't help the teen become a normal and balanced adult. She clearly needs a therapeutic approach built into the punishment.

My first thought was that maybe the teen has been abused in the past.

The bottom line is that people DO come out of detention/jail eventually. Do you really just want to punish them so they come out the same (or worse)? They are going to be in our midst again one day, may as well try to rehabilitate them so that they are hopefully more balanced, and less likely to repeat their crime.

Unfortunately, parents are often not well-equipped at noticing and/or addressing these types of problems. Another good reason to get her professional help. And this doesn't mean that her parents are necessarily to blame either. There are so many factors that could have caused this to happen that may have been out of their control.

I hope that both the teen and the younger girl get the help that they need.

Therapeutic approach? What a load of crap! Where are the parents in all of this? They need a good swift kick in the butt!

A lot of the problems with todays kids is parents. They use Playstations to babysit their kids and are too busy with their own lives to pay any attention to their kids.

Also you have teens engaging in sex and getting knocked up. They perpetuate this whole mess through neglecting their kids because they are out partying and getting knocked up and creating more little monsters for society to deal with.

The social system really needs to do better on this and drastic measures are needed. If parents lose their kids due to purposeful neglect then they should be made sterile so they can never reproduce again.

Draconian yes...but bleeding heart therapeutic approaches do not work and I am tired of financing the drug and alcohol habits of parents with my tax dollars!
