Skateboarder hopes bylaw will change

Fredericton's famous skateboarder Lee Breen is back in business.
The 25-year-old environmental advocate got back to his normal life this weekend by cutting lawns for his carbon-free lawn-care business and cleaning tables at the Capital Bar complex.
After failing to pay a $100 fine for skateboarding on Fredericton city streets, Breen was sentenced to five days in jail.
He spent one night in the slammer before being released and told to serve a period of house arrest until 8 a.m. on Saturday.
This weekend he was free to work nights at the bar and spend his days maintaining lawns for his Gas-Free Grass Cutters lawn maintenance company.
Breen said he can't go anywhere in Fredericton without people stopping to offer him support or discuss his campaign to repeal city bylaw S-9, which bans skateboards from city streets.
He said the outpouring of support has been overwhelming.
"It's been great," he said.
"I've had a lot of support and since I've been out (of jail), I've been doing a fair amount of work with my lawn-care business.
"People from all over are stopping me and telling me they're glad I stood up for something I believe in."
Breen said he never intended to become a spokesman for the issue, but he doesn't mind the media attention if it pays off with results.
"I just originally planned on not paying the fine," he said.
"But I do think it's good that this all happened. Hopefully, we can get this bylaw overturned."
