'Lost Boy' in capital

Corey Haim | Actor joins Frank Molina in new movie

A1

One of the biggest movie stars from the 1980s is filming a motion picture in the capital region this week.

Corey Haim, who starred in Hollywood blockbusters such as Licence To Drive, The Lost Boys, and Stephen King's Silver Bullet, filmed a scene at the popular Mexican eatery El Burrito Loco several days ago and will visit several other locations as work continues on the film.

The Toronto-born actor fell out of the spotlight in the 1990s and struggled briefly with addiction and financial troubles.

But Haim returned to the industry again in recent years by appearing in a reality television show The Two Coreys alongside good friend and fellow teen heartthrob Corey Feldman.

He also has a role in the Hollywood action movie Crank: High Voltage.

Global Universal Pictures, Inc. is making the film, which is tentatively titled American Sunset, with Haim, co-star Frank Molina and director Michael Masucci.

The film is being described as a mysterious thrill ride about "how one ordinary man travelled to hell and back to save his wife" from a crazed kidnapper.

This isn't the company's first film experience in Fredericton - Global Universal Pictures, Inc. completed principal photography on Blue Seduction, starring Billy Zane and Estelle Warren, in the region late last year.

Jim Lavoie has been working as a featured extra on American Sunset.

Lavoie, who's also a long-time member of the New Brunswick Film Co-Op, said it's been a pleasure working with Haim and the rest of the cast and crew.

"Often some of these stars are kind of stuck on themselves when you meet them," he said.

"But he wasn't at all. He's a really nice guy."

He said the city is developing a reputation for having talented crew members, fine actors and great set locations.

"I'm in contact with lots of groups who want to come to Fredericton," he said.

"It's such an easy place to sell. It's beautiful, it's got a river running through it, and it has most of the big-city stuff without being a big city. It's a perfect location and I think more and more companies are finding that they can come up here and shoot."

Lavoie said the production also gives the local film industry an opportunity to show off its skills and possibly attract future projects.

"We have top-notch cameramen and sound people and many people are making waves in the acting side of things," he said.

"I've had the opportunity to work on four commercial shoots now, and lots of independent (productions) and I can say with all sincerity that the talent that's available in New Brunswick is equal to anywhere."

The film is scheduled to be released in the fall.

This is an angle that Fredericton should exploit. Freddywood.

I wonder if they managed to get El Burrito Loco's dog in the shoot while he scratches himself next to a burrito.

I hear he was filming at King's Landing yesterday, which made me assume he was doing a period piece until I read this article...

Hey... I think I saw Gary Coleman hanging around downtown, maybe he's Corey Haim's minni-me in this movie.

BTW - Exactly when will 'Blue Seduction' be appearing at the theatre??? My guess is no time soon. According to IMDB it's in post-production and probably will be until they can it all together.
