National attention: Ann Dunn, president of the Fredericton Trails Coalition, gives a thumbs up for the coverage Fredericton trails are getting in Outpost Magazine.

In the July issue of Outpost Magazine on newsstands now, the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge Trail, which starts at the bridge, runs along the riverfront and ends in Odell Park, is included in a feature on Canada's top trails.

The story, which identifies four other trails nationwide, describes the city's trail network as "Canada's secret running gem."

It includes a photo of the walking bridge, a description of the trail's terrain and information on local attractions and summertime festivals.

The story came together about a month ago after conversations between officials with Fredericton Tourism and Outpost Magazine.

"We wanted to present our adventurous readers with a way to take in a city and a tourist destination in a new way while being active," said Sara Cation, senior project manager with Outpost Magazine.

"People travel to race and travel to participate in marathons. People really want to get off the beaten path."

Outpost Magazine, which is published bimonthly and distributed across North America, arrived at its list of top trails by talking to members of the Canadian Mountain Running Team and adventure travel writers.

Cation said Fredericton was a slam-dunk selection.

"We really got a great response from everyone we spoke to about Fredericton," she said. "It cuts through some major tourist sites like UNB, Odell Park and the old train bridge and we just loved that.''

Wayne Tallon, community services director for the City of Fredericton, said he hopes the article will convince running enthusiasts to make the trip to Fredericton.

"It will hopefully help attract people to the city,'' said Tallon. "The baby boomers are looking for outdoor adventures and hiking, biking and trail use is certainly on top of their priority list, and I think this will help.

"It's exciting. To be recognized for all the work we have done building the trails is great. Third-party recognition is always nice."

Ann Dunn, president of the Fredericton Trails Coalition, said she wasn't surprised to see the walking bridge included alongside trails running through Banff National Park, Vancouver's North Shore Mountains and the heart of Montreal.

"It is a wonderful write-up and it is well-deserved recognition,'' she said Thursday.

"For the trail runners to have picked Fredericton out of a spot where there are wonderful trails to run is terrific and I think it has to do with how many trails there are to run in city limits."

The Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge Trail is the only trail east of Montreal to make Outpost Magazine's list.

This is excellent news and shows what can become of the trail system if we preserve and protect it from encroachment from motorized vehicles. Well done, city of Fredericton you have for years resisted the ATV and snowmobile gangs and now it pays off!

Having jogged on quite a few trails in my lifetime, I can happily agree that the Bill Thorpe Trail in Fredericton, and every other trail within and just beyond the city of Fredericton, easily qualify as outstanding. Congratulations to Ann Dunn for obvious dedication to the cause. I am looking forward to a few good runs when I return to NB this August.

No one other than a kid would drive there ATV or snowmobile in town D W right down the green on a main walking trail no more than I would walk right down queen street drinking a beer. Now these walking trails go outside of town they go from crusher dust ,to crushed rock and then to sand ,and the trees hang out over these trails and if it wasn't for atv riders it would be only a few years and these trails would be grown over.

Prehaps but several ATV and snowmobile gangs have demanded access from council in th past. Vigilance is necessary. Overgrowth is part of what makes the trail interesting as you get close with nature while walking. Choking on ATV gang-banger dust takes away fromt he experience no to mention the hydro-carbons ATV gangs put into the air to recreate!

I'am an ATV rider and would never ride on a trail within the city limits. But in the outskirts of town I have never once came across someone walking on the trail. If someone was walking they would be broke down and happy to see me. Trails as you put it ,interesting would be impassable on account of dead falls . Gangs not sure what u mean buy that but its just friends out for a harmless ride out in the woods, as far as hydro-carbons I suppose you walk everywhere and don't have a car.Maybe you should walk to Moncton on your next trip ,just think what you would do for the environment.

My car goes 65km without burning any gas! I have no need to go to Moncton, Fredericton offers everything I need.
