World mourns 'King of Pop'

LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson's brother says it's believed that the pop star died of cardiac arrest.

Jermaine Jackson cautioned at a hospital media conference Thursday that the cause of his death wouldn't be known until an autopsy was performed.

He said Michael Jackson's personal doctor and paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his rented home in Holmby Hills.

A team of doctors at UCLA Medical Center also tried for more than an hour.

Los Angeles police Lieut. Gregg Strenk said at a separate news conference that police robbery-homicide detectives have been ordered to investigate, which is common in a high-profile case.

Strenk said the coroner's office, which will handle inquiries into the type of death, is taking possession of the body.

Jackson, the sensationally gifted child star who rose to become the "King of Pop" and the biggest celebrity in the world only to fall from his throne in a freakish series of scandals, was 50 years old.

Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album Thriller - which included the blockbuster hits Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller - is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.

The public first knew him in the late 1960s, when as a boy he was the precocious, spinning lead singer of the Jackson 5, the music group he formed with his four older brothers. Among their No. 1 hits were I Want You Back, ABC, and I'll Be There.

He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.

"For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words," said Quincy Jones, who produced Thriller.

"He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."

Jackson ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the biggest pop sensations of all time. He united two of music's biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie, and Jackson's death immediately evoked that of Presley himself, who died at age 42 in 1977.

Jackson caused a furor in 2002 when he playfully dangled his infant son, Prince Michael II, over a hotel balcony in Berlin while a throng of fans watched from below.

In 2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003.

Hey Maritimer ...
Don't forget MJ was found 'NOT GUILTY' by the Supreme Court. Obviously you are much smarter than them, and were neglect in releasing the pertinent information to the prosecution.
So glad I moved to NB. I had forgot what insinuations were !!

I thought he paid the boy and his family off? Maybe I am not remembering correctly? I'm pretty sure the supreme court had nothing to do with him getting off, his money did. Maybe i am wrong? LOL, either way....kinda glad the freak show is over.

It's too bad he died but in my mind he had already died a long time ago. I used to love him as a teenager and he was a great artist, but I did not care for the person he became in his later years....I don't know if I believe the allegations about the child abuse - but I do know he was weird.

I feel sadness that someone so wealthy could be so engrossed with his own appearance that he did nothing to better the situation of the world. Truly a wasted opportunity that this "King of Pop" had no political views, no thoughts on the poor and oppressed and desire to use his status to lead change. Everything wasted on expensive self-multilation. There is simply no legacy other than a few songs that will die out with the generation the enjoyed them.

DW - You are completely wrong with your comment on wasted opportunities. Michael Jackson gave alot to people who were in need. Do you remember the song "We are the world"? He helped more people than most of us can ever imagine.

He became without a doubt, very strange over the years and his actions were disturbing at times, but nevertheless he was human and desrves some respect.

A quick Google search of your online monicker brings up a gaggle of libellous tripe.

It is my secret desire that someday, someone will see the countless unsubstantiated, libellous comments you post on this website and sue you for every penny you have.

I look forward to reading that story on A1 — and commenting. You're a veritable legal liability for Canadaeast.com.

So I could not resist....is it sad that Michael Jackson passed away...by some margin yes. However, don't forget the fact that he was in question for inappropriate actions with children...and yes he did in fact admit to likeing to have children share his bed...that is in a documentary for all to see.
But why did he make the front page and NOT Farrah Fawcett? She was a beautiful human being who died before her time (yes MJ did too)...but why was he the feature? What about Ed McMann? He's also passed away this week....To say the World Mourns Michael Jackson is a stretch...a large population yes....Ms.Fawcett will be greatly missed as well.

I don't wish death on anyone...but the world need not forget that Michael Jackson was not a "normal" human being....did he deserve to die? NO absolutely not...but why is this more newsworthy???
