The City of Fredericton is in the environmental winners circle.

The city recently received recognition for its workplace wellness programs, water and sewer engineering expertise and its efforts to reduce waste through composting.

It received the Silver Workplace Wellness Award at the first annual Workplace Wellness conference held recently in Moncton.

Joe Lumsdon, the city's human resources manager, accepted the award on behalf of the city.

The city was also recognized for its corporate and department-specific wellness programs and activities promoting healthy eating, physical activity, psychological health and the importance of being smoke-free.

Fredericton was the only municipality to receive an award and one of two Fredericton-area recipients. Place 2000 Health and Wellness Committee also received a silver award.

The city also recently received two awards for its engineering expertise.

The engineering and public works department's water and sewer division, in partnership with Stantec (formerly Neill and Gunter Engineering), was honoured at the Consulting Engineers of New Brunswick Association's annual dinner and showcase awards gala held recently in Saint John.

The Innovation and Sustainability awards went to Stantec and the City of Fredericton for the work done to investigate and regenerate Fredericton's large water supply wells. The work also won the 2006 Atlantic Canada Water Works Association Award for Best Project.

Last week, the Composting Council of Canada presented the Fredericton Backyard Composters group with a community achievement award in recognition of the group's long-term dedication to composting.

The Composting Council of Canada is a national, non-profit organization that advocates composting and compost usage. The award was presented during International Compost Awareness Week on May 4-10. Longtime member Debby Peck accepted the award on behalf of the group.
