Fredericton band Holophonic Porno are hoping to blow away the competition at the 2009 East Coast Music Awards when they compete in the Loud Recording of the Year category.

Tonella Roy, who sings and plays synthesizers with the band, said the group wanted to take a step in a new musical direction.

Roy said she's excited that people are attracted to the group's album, Obsession, because it was an attempt to inject something new into Fredericton's music scene.

"I'm really proud of the effort we put into this and that it's being received the way it is," she said.

"This city is not really known for its electronica or rock. It's more of the indie feel that draws the most attention, so this is a really good thing ... We really love the idea of marrying two different concepts like the heavier guitars and the happier melodies."

She said it's fun to play with bandmates James Gauthier, Dan Rogers, James McClafferty and Peter Lockhart.

"I really, really enjoy playing with this band," she said.

"I do a solo thing on the side - which is a more laid-back Tori Amos piano thing. So this is great because I get to get a little more aggression out. It's definitely more energetic."

The band still isn't sure if it will travel to Corner Brook, NL for the awards festival.

Andersen to miss ECMAs for tour with Stuart McLean

Matt Andersen won't be able to attend the 2009 East Coast Music Awards because he'll be travelling with Stuart McLean and Meaghan Smith on The Vinyl Café tour.

The bluesman from Bairdsville said the tour is a unique opportunity to play to new audiences so he jumped at the chance to perform with the popular CBC storyteller.

"I'm going to be doing 20 shows on the East Coast with him from mid-February to March," he said.

"It's going to be cool to get in front of some new people. A lot of people who will come to those shows have never heard of me so that will be a big plus. And you get some national radio exposure."

Andersen, Smith and McLean will perform two shows in Fredericton at The Playhouse on Feb. 24-25.

The Vinyl Café tour will make its way throughout the Maritimes and into the United States between Feb. 17 and Mar. 11.

She Roars! to take hiatus

Local pop-punkers She Roars! are taking a brief hiatus while one of its members goes on a four-month adventure.

Max LeBlanc, who sings and plays guitar for the band, said recently that he's leaving Fredericton to pursue his education.

"I'm going to Honduras and I'm going to be scuba-diving," he said.

"I've decided that I wanted to further my dive certification so I'm going down there so I can do that and hopefully get a job taking tourists down below at some point. It should be pretty wild."

That means LeBlanc will be away until the end of April.

He said the band will pick up where they left off when he gets back and he's already making plans to work on his writing - at least when he's not underwater.

"I've been writing a little bit already," he said.

"I should have a bunch of ideas by the time I get back. I'm bringing my guitar. We're going to start things up again in May and I think we'll have some new songs ready and we're going to record an album then."
