The Moncton Fire Department says a cat was rescued from a house that was extensively damaged Friday afternoon.
Acting platoon chief Jamie Rooney said firefighters were called to a fire on McSweeney Avenue at 1:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they observed heavy smoke coming from the back of the house. They used stretch lines to extinguish the fire.
A search of the house showed no human occupants at the time, but a family cat was located and rescued. The cat was taken to the SPCA.
Rooney said the fire caused extensive damage to the rear of the house, making it uninhabitable. The Canadian Red Cross was making arrangements for temporary shelter for the occupants.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
McSweeney Avenue is off Mountain Road near The Moncton Hospital.
