HALIFAX - An Air Canada jet was struck twice by lightning Wednesday shortly after leaving Toronto for Halifax with 81 people on board.

The flight landed in Halifax without incident, but the plane was immediately taken out of service for inspection.

Airline spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said that meant having to cancel a return flight.

Fitzpatrick said planes are designed to take the hit from lightning.

He said all those scheduled to leave Halifax on the plane were accommodated on other flights.
