Soldier's wife touched by offer to see Elton John

Oromocto's Marcie Curnew had given up hope that she would be able to treat her husband Tim, a master bombardier stationed in Afghanistan, to an Elton John concert in September.

She spent much of Saturday on the Harbour Station website trying to get seats to his Sept. 30 Saint John show, but the website slowed to a crawl by 2.5-million people simultaneously trying to buy tickets.

After writing a letter to a daily newspaper about her frustration with the system, Curnew got a call Wednesday night that blew her away.

Laurie Greenslade, the mother of Pte. David Greenslade - a Saint John soldier who died in Afghanistan last April - had extra tickets. She offered to sell them to Curnew at face value.

"This just proved to me that there are still nice people out there that look out for one another," she said. "I was so disappointed a few days ago because my husband really wanted to see him (John), but now I feel great.

"I had no intentions whatsoever when I wrote the letter that I would get tickets, and I basically had come to terms with the fact that we weren't going, so this is quite a surprise."

Curnew said her husband has been a lifelong Elton John fan, and she is hoping having a concert to look forward to in September will help him get through his last couple of months in Afghanistan. He has been stationed there since February and is expected home in early September.

"I called him and told him last night, and he sounded pretty excited," she said. "It's a real morale booster for him, and it's something he can look forward to."
