Locals earn medals at world karate tourney
Fredericton instructor Jeremy Durelle and two of his students, Yashna Hathi and Aaron Granger, recently competed at the World Wado Kai Karate Championships in Vancouver.
Hathi earned a silver medal in her individual fighting division losing to the gold medallist from Russia. Durelle was part of the Canadian men's team fighting which took third place. Russia was first, Japan was second.
Granger, who has been training for just over a year, fought well against two Russian competitors but was eliminated.
FHS offering fall girls hoops league
Fredericton High School is holding its annual girl's fall basketball league. It is open to all girls in the Fredericton area in grades 6-12.
The league gets underway Sept. 14 and goes Sundays and Tuesdays until Oct. 7 from 6-7 p.m. Cost is $60. Application forms are available by contacting Steve O'Rourke at stephen.o'rourke@nbed.nb.ca or at 453-5286.
Arbeau wins by seven at Aroostook Valley
Fredericton's Jamie Arbeau cruised to a seven-shot victory over clubmate Tony MacKinnon at the St. John Valley Open played at the Aroostook Valley Country Club on the weekend.
Arbeau posted a two-day total of 140 and collected 20 points in the Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza NB Men's Player of the Year Standings.
Moncton's Mathieu Gingras continues to hold a commanding lead in the overall standings with 85 points. Fredericton Eric Coffin sits in second place with 55.3 points.
One team needed for oldtimers hockey
There's an opening for one more 35-and-older team in the McGinnis Landing Molson Canadians' fourth annual early bird hockey tournament. The men's 19-35 age groups are full.
The tourney runs Sept. 19-21 at the LBR and Willie O'Ree Place. Interested teams are asked to call 472-1626.
Openings available for UNB hockey camps
There are still openings for a pair of UNB Fall Pumpernickel Hockey Camps. The power skating/puck skills camp (ages 6-16) runs Sept. 9-14 while the elite prep camp (ages 14-19) starts Sept. 14 and ends Sept. 30.
The former camp will offer sessions combining the emphasis of edge control and stride lengthening with proper development in all of the fundamentals of skating.
