Snowmobile clubs, city reach deal
Published Friday January 2nd, 2009

Fredericton city council will ink a licence agreement with the Nashwaak Valley Snowmobile Club and the Fredericton Snowmobile Club to create a north-south and west-east link for snowmobilers on city-owned property.
The licence will formalize an arrangement the two local snowmobile clubs have had with the city to use short, designated sections of trails.
The licence allows the two snowmobile clubs to construct and maintain the links in order to have access to the north side of the city.
In 1998, city council gave approval to the Nashwaak Valley Snowmobile Club to use a short section of the city trail in Marysville.
The purpose of the approval was to give the snowmobilers a safe crossing spot on the Nashwaak River.
"This arrangement has continued over the years and appears to be working quite well," said a staff report presented to city council.
"However, one of the continuing obstacles for the snowmobile trail network is the pressure new development is placing on traditional snowmobile routes within municipalities," the report stated.
Each year, the city and snowmobile clubs talk about accessibility to services and the use of dedicated walking trails within city limits.
Increased traffic along Two Nations Crossing and Cliffe Street corridor has affected snowmobilers who have traditionally followed the electrical distribution lines that crossed both streets.
Engineering and public works staff, together with Fredericton Police Force members, have reviewed public right-of-way crossings as well as provincial policies and decided to post warning signs at points where snowmobilers may be crossing.
