Mayor to promote city's smarts

Mayor Brad Woodside will travel to Hawaii later this month to promote Fredericton's technological prowess at an international smart conference.

The conference, which is titled Collaborating for Change: Strategies, Opportunities and Partnerships, will be held in Honolulu on Jan. 18-21.

Woodside has been asked to participate in a panel discussion on how successful communities use broadband and WiFi networks to gain an economic advantage, improve local government services and make life easier for citizens and businesses.

He said the trip will help to elevate the city's status as a leader in the world of information technology.

"It's a strategic opportunity for Fredericton," he said.

The capital region's longest-serving mayor will make a presentation on how Fredericton has been able to implement and embrace new broadband and WiFi technologies to a room full of university professors, CEOs and community leaders from across the globe.

The Intelligent Communities Forum will also announce the world's top seven intelligent communities at the conference. But Fredericton resident Tim Andrew, who ran against Woodside in the last municipal election, said the trip is another example of city council's frivolous spending.

He said he's not surprised to see it opening up the coffers for a new marketing trip.

"They still don't seem to have the message that times are tough," he said.

Andrew said many local residents are frustrated that the city recently decided not to reduce the tax rate and that it will spend $150,000 promoting the unfinished convention centre.

"The money all comes from taxpayers who are not going to be any richer this year than they were last year - probably less," he said.

"So I think it's unfortunate that the mayor thinks this is an appropriate time to go to Hawaii."

Woodside spoke about fiscal restraint in his recent state of the city address, but he also made it clear that Fredericton would put a special effort into another run at this year's smart city competition.

"I made it abundantly clear that we were pulling out all the stops for this particular effort, but I also said it isn't going to be something we're chasing after every year," he said.

"It would probably be a little more acceptable if it were in North Bay, Ont., but (they're having it in Hawaii). That's where they've had it every year. It's one of the largest (conferences) in the world and it gives us exposure that you can't put a price tag on."

He said the trip is another chance to impress the competition's judges, sell the city's growing reputation to competing communities, and share information with other municipal leaders who are trying to follow in Fredericton's technological footprints.

"What I'm going to be talking about there is something that a lot of cities in North America still haven't been able to do," he said.

"When you see the city of Philadelphia, that has tried (to do what we've done with our free WiFi network) and failed, and is still continuing to try based on a model that Fredericton put forth as the first in Canada, one of the first in North America, it's pretty impressive."

Fredericton has been named to the Smart21 list three times by the Intelligent Communities Forum and was ranked as one of the world's top seven smart cities in 2008.

Brad Woodside should be hung out to dry, He and council led by him cannot find money for important things like the citizens of the citizens of fredericton or the homless shelter, but as long as he can drag his butt around the world at the citizens expense he's happy. Perhaps its time to tell Brad that his services are no longer required any hairbrain can live high on the hog at someone else's expense

Hey it sounds like a great vacation but it most likly does not compare to where the New Brusnwick tax dollars have been sending Shawn Graham and his no back bone ministers over the past year.

It might be a bit overzealous to compare a free WI-FI Internet in Fredericton compared to one that they are trying to build in Philadelphia. I believe if you stood at one corner of the 'zone' in Fredericton and put someone else at the other side of the 'zone', you could probably see each other.

If the Fredericton WI-FI Internet connection is that good, Brad should be able to attend the Conference via video/web conference from the corner of York & Queen. No need for him to waste tax-payer's dollars flying to the middle of the Pacific. Attending the conference via video/web from the corner of York & Queen would demonstrate the value. I challege Brad to reply with reasons why he can not network with attendees via video/web conference and please don't use the time difference excuse. A small player on the Infobahan needs to demonstrate the Productivity Gain of Fredericton WI-FI system. If Brad was to stand in front of City Hall, the web-cam would photograph him and that could be captured and used as a marketing tool.

I await your reply, Brad.

I agree with Peter Hughes on this issue. I bet he would not be going if it would be in the middle of July! Plus, doesn't still have a riverboat business to run in the summer? In any case, it seems to be a waste of taxpayers' money. Trying to get Canadian companies interested should be his goal. I used to think he was smarter than this. Very disappointed. I guess a politician is always a politician....spend, spend as long as there is money. His competition at the last election? Well, no comment here.

Seems like there are some smart people reading this article -if Brad can't figure out web conferenceing, as outlined by Peter Hughes, and make it work as a successful cost effective solution - why is he leading the delegation to Hawaii? I bet his buddies get to go along too - and I doubt if they will be looking for seat sales - especially since it's being billed to the taxpayers.
Shame on you Brad - seems like you've caught the greedy bug!
What happens if the flight can't leave due to a storm - is the conferenc e going to wait for you??

An economic downturn, talk of a depression, no funding for shelters or other needed services and this guy (and council) think it makes sense to borrow money to build an office complex and convention centre, and travel to Hawaii on our dime.
The Gleaner should make a point of reviewing his expenses when he returns.
Folks need to remember this kind of foolishness when the next election comes up. This guy and 90% of the councillors need to be sent home.

Many years ago Mr. Woodside tried to crucify the former Chief of Police over the alleged car rental embezzlement fiasco. Is it the job of the mayor to take vacations under the guise of "Smart City" propaganda? Who's misusing the system now? It's a shame we had no legitimate choice for mayor!
