An osprey doing some home improvement on its nest left nearly 10,000 Fredericton residents without power Friday morning.

The outage, which affected residents in Fredericton, Oromocto, Fredericton Junction and Rusagonis, was caused when an osprey dropped a large stick onto a power line at around 6 a.m. Friday.

"When they are readjusting or rebuilding their nests, it can cause problems, and what happened was they dropped a large, large stick and it caused a transmission outage," said NB Power spokeswoman Heather MacLean.

NB Power crews restored power to most homes within a couple hours Friday, although about 1,800 residents in the Oromocto area were without power until noon, as yet another stick dropped by an osprey caused problems for crews.

"It was in a flooded area and we had to access it by boat, and when we were out there we thought we had found the location and it was one very large stick. But when we tried to bring (power) back (to) the remaining costumers, we were having some difficulty, so we took a helicopter out to the line and found another very large stick," said MacLean.

No ospreys were hurt in either outage.
