MONCTON - Emergency personnel and bystanders worked together Sunday to rescue four people after a vehicle went over an embankment and fell into a river below.
Four people were hurt in the crash on Route 11 and one woman remains in the intensive care unit at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Regional Hospital.
"It's a miracle everyone survived," said RCMP Sgt. Scott Sawyer.
A motorist phoned 9-1-1 around 5:40 p.m. on Sunday and told police about the crash, that occurred between the Jacquet River and Nash Creek exits in northern New Brunswick.
"They saw a car driving fine and then it suddenly veered and went over the guardrail," said Sawyer.
Emergency crews responded and found the north-bound vehicle had plummeted more than 100 feet (30 metres) into the river below. The car landed on its side and in a part of the river that's only three feet (one metre) deep.
Sawyer said the river was deeper in places and the current was strong, so a boat was used to paddle to the car. A large group of people on shore, including bystanders, volunteer firefighters, police and paramedics, held the rope and pulled the boat back to shore after each person was extracted.
