The provincial government is spending $5.22 million on seven rural highway projects south of Fredericton.

Transportation Minister Denis Landry visited the Gagetown, Harvey and McAdam region Tuesday to announce the work.

"As a rural MLA and former small-business owner, I know how important these highways are for small communities," he said.

"As part of our economic stimulus plan, this government is investing in all corners of the province, putting people to work and modernizing our roads and highways."

The province will spend $1.9 million paving 5.3 kilometres of Route 4 from Davis Brook towards McAdam.

"The road was kind of torn up," said Landry. "The people are happy (the work is being done)."

A collapsed culvert on Route 102 at Kitchen Brook will be replaced for $1.36 million.

"Route 102 is a very important connection, supporting daily traffic and tourism as part of the River Valley Scenic Drive," said Landry.

"We have moved quickly to get this section of highway rebuilt as quickly as possible."

Two projects valued at $636,000 will improve Route 3 in Harvey. These projects will involve installing gutters, a sidewalk and pavement on a 0.7-km section from the village centre to the southern municipal limit.

"The mayor came to see me last year," said Landry.

"The road is really rough. We are going to fix that."

The roadwork announced Tuesday also includes a $1.31-million project to grade 1.6 km of Route 785 in Sunbury County.

Two micro-surfacing contracts valued at $937,000 will be undertaken on 3.4 km of Route 3 between McCullough Road and Fletcher Road and 3.5 km of Route 101 between O'Leary Road and the Northeast Pipeline.

The roadwork is part of the province's $385.8 million Department of Transportation capital budget.

Landry said the province's roadbuilders aren't having any trouble lining up enough equipment and personnel to do all the work because the province gave them lots of notice back in December about the size of the capital budget.

Route 102 is a disgrace from the flashing light at Westfield to the bridge at Gagetown, by Robbins Donuts.
Woodmans Point, Lower and Central Greenwich, Hampstead, Gagetown only get the left overs to patch the pavement. Totally unacceptable.
Trees are growing right over the road in places. Limbs are falling off onto the road, near the Evandale Ferry.
Grass/weeds are growing right to the pavement.
So, Mr. Landry, are you going to take a "scenic drive" along our stretch of Rte 102..you know the forgotten part of the road.
There is no scenery on the river side, in a lot of the places, due to the overgrown trees and bushes.

If you want a disgrace...drive Rte 122 west of Canterbury...you could literaly break a wheel off in the holes. No road repair yet this year. The local DOT people don't know what their doing, so several years of their "dis-repair" have caused it to be a disaster.
