Published Wednesday July 8th, 2009

The relationship between a teacher and student will be celebrated at St. Thomas University's summer convocation when honorary degrees are conferred to music teacher Mabel Doak and her former student Measha Brueggergosman, a world-renowned soprano.
Brueggergosman began her musical career by singing in the choirs of her church and elementary school.
She started voice training at age seven with Doak, David Steves and Wendy Nielsen.
She has since worked with national and international orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
Brueggergosman has performed recitals around the world, and won a Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year in 2008.
Doak, a native of Fredericton, was admitted to the St. Anne's Junior Girls' Choir at age seven, and later began taking singing lessons. She received acclaim for her performances in the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music and the inaugural Fredericton Music Festival.
She also received the Fredericton Music Society Award for excellence in teaching and contribution to the art of music in 2004.
Her instruction in singing and performance at the annual vocal techniques weekend for the St. Andrews Arts Council attracts students from across Canada.
Doak and Brueggergosman will receive their honorary degrees July 15 at a courtyard ceremony at 7 p.m.
