Big boost: Mike Allen, MP for Tobique-Mactaquac; Ed Gill, chairman of the Keswick Valley Arena; and Finance Minister Greg Byrne announce funding for the arena Saturday.

The funding will be used to complete renovations. The lighting was recently upgraded, and plans are underway to replace dehumidifiers. The previous lights and dehumidifiers were outdated.

Ed Gill, chairman of the Keswick Valley Arena, said he's thrilled that the arena will be able to complete these much-needed renovations.

"Government funding is really nice to have, but sometimes tough to get," he said. "We're so pleased to receive this money."

The federal government is providing $25,264 through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program.

"When you look at a project like this, you see how much of a difference a little bit of money makes in a small community," Allen said.

"I know this will be a great facility in the region for years to come."

The government of New Brunswick is contributing an additional $20,000 toward the project.

"It's good to be able to contribute to infrastructure projects such as this one," Byrne said. "This complex has really been the heart of the community for years."

The Keswick Valley Regional Arena Inc. will cover the additional $26,218 needed to complete the project.

Gill said the funding will be a great help toward improving the arena, but he has future updates in mind as well.

"We do need to upgrade our Zambonis," he said. "That's a project that will take at least a year, and we'll hope to get funding for that as well."
