
V-Reds finish third in AUS men's soccer

University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds finished up their regular season schedule with a pair of victories on the road in Atlantic University Sport men's soccer conference play.
V-Reds defeated University de Moncton Aigles Bleus 4-3 yesterday and Acadia Axemen 2-0 on Friday to finish third overall with 18 points on a 7-2-4 won-loss-tie slate.
Winning the regular season title was Cape Breton with a 9-1-3 mark followed by Dalhousie at 8-2-3. UPEI tied with UNB each with 18 points, but UNB gets third because of a better head to head record.
UPEI settles for fourth at 8-5-0 followed by St. Francis at 5-4-4 and UdeM at 5-6-2 rounding out the six playoff teams. UNB will play UdeM in quarter final action Friday at the AUS tournament being hosted by Dalhousie in Halifax.
In women's action, UNB finished the regular conference in last place with a 2-10-1 mark. V-Reds finished off the season by losing 3-2 to Universite de Moncton yesterday in Moncton. On Friday, UNB and Acadia played to a 2-2 deadlock in Wolfville.
Dalhousie Tigers claimed top spot with a 10-0-3 mark followed by UPEI at 9-3-1, Cape Breton at 7-2-4, St. FX at 8-4-1, Moncton at 5-5-3 and Saint Mary's at 4-7-2 rounding out the playoff spots.
UNB Volleyball
It was a rough opening weekend for the University of New Brunswick Varsity
Reds in Atlantic university women's volleyball conference play.
The V-Reds lost each of their four matches against Quebec Conference schools as regular season play kicked off with interlocking action at Universite de Moncton.
Four AUS schools including UNB, Cape Breton, Memorial and host Moncton took to the floor against Quebec counterparts from Montreal, Laval, McGill and Sherbrooke and walked away empty-handed over the three days of action.
UNB lost 3-1 to Sherbrooke Friday, 3-1 and 3-0 to Montreal and McGill respectively Saturday and finished up with a 3-1 loss to Laval yesterday. V-Reds were missing Tanya Paulin of Bathurst out with an injury, leaving the UNBers with 10 players.
Against Sherbrooke, UNB lost 25-16 and 25-10, won the third set 30-28 but lost the finale 25-13. Monica Jones had 14 digs for UNB while Asia Leavins of Calgary led with eight kills and 10 digs. First year Rebecca Glancy had 12 kills and 18 points in the match.
Set scores against No. 2 ranked Montreal were 26-24, 17-25, 14-25 and 14-25 favouring the Quebec school. Jones had 17 digs to lead UNB. Emma Hunt had nine points and 10 digs for the V-Reds.
Against No. 9 McGill, UNB lost each of its three sets by scores of 24-26, 18-25 and 18-25. Fifth year Barb Vriends had 14 points for UNB. Jones added 16 digs.
Yesterday, UNB was able to win the second set, 25-20, but couldn't sustain any momentum against the No. 5 ranked Laval. Sets scores were 22-25, 24-26 and 18-25 to go along with UNB's win in the second set. Vriends had eight stuff blocks and 16 points. Fourth year Jill Blanchard had 16 kills and 21 points and 19 digs for UNB. Jones added 18 digs.
STU volleyball
St. Thomas Tommies geared up for the start of their regular schedule in the ACAA women's volleyball conference by winning three matches as they played host to a mini-three team tournament on the weekend.
The team coached by Ed Welch defeated the STU alumni 3-2 with set scores being 25-23, 22-25, 14-25, 25-14 and 15-9 on Saturday and later upended University of Maine at Fort Kent 3-0 with set scores being 25-18, 25-13 and 25-21.
On Sunday, they played Fort Kent again and prevailed 3-0 with set scores being 25-12, 25-22 and 25-6.
The STU alumni also beat Fort Kent 3-0 on Saturday with the set scores being 25-10, 25-15 and 25-13.
STU doesn't begin its regular schedule until Nov. 14-15 when they host Mount Allison Mounties.
In STU men's volleyball action, the Tommies split a pair of matches Saturday at the tip-off tournament held at Holland College. STU lost 25-18 but came back to beat Holland College 26-24. In their second match against King's College, STU lost 25-19 before rebounding 25-22.
On Sunday, STU beat Universite de Ste, Anne 25-13 and 26-24 before losing 25-16 and 25-22 to University of New Brunswick at Saint John Seawolves. Tommies begin their regular season Saturday against Holland College Hurricanes at the South Gym.
UNB Basketball
University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds were 81-70 losers to Southern New Hampshire University in exhibition men's basketball action Sunday in Manchester, N.H.
Colton Wilson had 23 points and seven rebounds to lead the V-Reds who played a couple of scrimmages against New England Div. II schools earlier in weekend play. On Thursday, they lost 90-46 to Bentley College and lost 99-60 to St. Anselm's on Saturday. Both games were recorded as scrimmages.
Leading New Hampshire yesterday was Steve Wood with 18 points.
In women's action, the Jeff Speedy-coached V-Reds lost for the third time on their tour of New England, 85-58 to NCAA Div. I University of Maine Black Bears. UNB trailed 39-26 at the half and couldn't recover. Katelyn Vanderhoof led Maine with 23 points. Emma Russell had 13 to lead UNB while Melissa Foster with 11 and Megan Corby with 10 also had double figures for the V-Reds. UNB begins regular season action hosting Dalhousie and St. Francis this coming weekend at the UNB main gym.
STU basketball
The St. Thomas University men's Tommies lost a pair of games to Central Maine Community College in exhibition men's play on the weekend.
Tommies lost the first game 66-53 with Tyler Smithgall leading the Maine squad with 25 points.
Ryan MacPherson and Andrew Holmes each had 12 points for STU.
Tommies lost 86-65 to Central Maine yesterday. Matt Finley led the winners with 15 points while the Tommies were led by Matt Robertson with 10 points.
On Friday, the Tommies lost 74-67 to University of Maine at Machias in a game that went into overtime.
Clifford McDonald had 20 points to pace the Maine squad while Brad LeBritton led STU with 16 points. Robertson added 14 in a losing cause.
