Northside home damaged in fire

Smoke and fire damaged a St. Mary's First Nation home at 495 Maliseet Dr. after a fire ignited in the kitchen.
Vivian Brooks and her family stood watching as firefighters arrived shortly before 4 p.m. Monday after receiving a 9-1-1 call.
"Nobody was home," said Brooks, who expressed relief that no one was hurt.
Electricians were installing a stove.
Brooks said it's her understanding that an electrician was in the basement working at the electrical panel after the stove had been installed when he heard the smoke detector in the house go off.
Capt. Steve Fraser, acting platoon captain with the Fredericton Fire Department, said electricians were working at the residence and that the fire originated around the stove.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Windows and doors of the home were flung open as firefighters tried to vent the smoke out of the bungalow.
Fraser said the house sustained extensive smoke and fire damage in the kitchen and it was likely the family would have to find alternative accommodation for Monday night.
