DOAKTOWN - An early morning blaze destroyed a home at 199 Main St. in Doaktown on Monday.
The fire was reported around 12:40 a.m. by a neighbour who saw flames shooting from the back of the house.
"We heard a loud bang that shook the house and rattled the windows," said Rebecca Lyons, who lives next door. "We thought it was the bear that had been around our house. Then we heard another bang and saw the lights from the fire shining on the wall, and I called the fire department,
"I was very worried about the safety of my two young children."
Members of the Doaktown Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
"The lower side (garage) was fully involved when we arrived," said firefighter Thomas Colford.
"The live wires prevented us from putting an attack team inside the house. As a result, we were unable to suppress the fire and save the house.
"Once the fire got into the walls, which were insulated with old newspapers and sawdust, we lost the battle."
The house, the former Wesleyan Church parsonage, was unoccupied at the time of the blaze and was undergoing renovations. There was a for-sale sign hanging in the front yard.
The home was destroyed in the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by District 6 RCMP.
