Reformatory fire probe expected to be difficult, sergeant says
Published Wednesday November 4th, 2009

An RCMP investigation into a suspicious fire Monday morning at the former Kingsclear Central Reformatory could take a while to complete.
Sgt. Claude Tremblay said many factors have combined to make the probe difficult.
"The problem is the building has been vacant for 22 years and has been broken into several times," he said. "The front looks pretty good, but the back was a little bit of a mess. People have been going in and out. There are still beds, mattresses all over the place inside."
The early morning blaze destroyed one of the vacant structures on the hillside property owned by the provincial department of Supply and Services.
Firefighters from a number of departments, including Keswick Ridge, Kingsclear, Upper Kingsclear, Oromocto, Fredericton and New Maryland, responded.
"We don't know how long the fire was burning before it got through the roof," Tremblay said.
While the two ends of the building are standing, the middle has collapsed.
The ends may have to be knocked down before it's safe for investigators to examine the area more closely, Tremblay said.
