
Arts grants announced

Anee bertrand, chairwoman of the New Brunswick Foundation for the Arts, has announced the 2009 winners of the Foundation for the Arts Awards.
* The TD Canada Trust Award for the Arts Organization of the Year - $3,000 - was awarded to the Frye Festival for its work with young audiences in the area of the literary arts.
* The Arts Municipality of the Year Award - $10,000 - went to the City of Fredericton to commission a work of public art for the new Convention Centre, which will open in 2010 on Queen Street.
* The J.D. Irving Arts and Cultural Partnership Award - $5,000 for a public or not-for-profit arts or cultural organization of the choice of the winner - was given to a group of three entrepreneurs: Parise Cote, Lori-Ann Cyr and Sylvain St-Onge, who provided special funding which enabled the establishment of the St. Paul Centre for Arts and Culture in Edmundston.
* The Caisses populaires acadiennes Arts and Cultural Management Award - $5,000 for a not-for-profit arts or cultural organization of the choice of the winner - recognized Tim Yerxa for his management of a diversified artistic program.
* The Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for Professional Development in the Arts - $1,000 - will enable Whitefeather Hunter to pursue her studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and work in a new direction, that of incorporating different sculptural techniques into her artwork.
* The Nel Oudemans Memorial Scholarship - which provides financial assistance of $1,000 for advanced studies in fine crafts - was awarded to Heather Urdang for her studies in surface design at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.
A jury formed of arts professionals met in August to evaluate the candidates nominated for the 2009 prizes.
Bertrand said she was enchanted by the jury's decisions.
"All the award winners deserve our admiration and our continuing support," she said.
TD Canada Trust was awarded to Fredericton's Gallery Connexion in 2006, to the Saint John Theatre Company in 2007 and to the New Brunswick Federation of Music Festivals in 2008.
