A vaccination clinic for pregnant women held Friday in Fredericton gave many the chance to protect themselves from the H1N1 virus.

The Department of Health received almost 4,500 doses of the vaccine for pregnant women this week and immediately scheduled clinics for women 20 weeks or further into their term, or who are less than 20 weeks into their term and have an existing medical condition.

Fredericton resident Amanda Munn said a conversation with her physician helped remove any doubts she had about the H1N1 flu shot.

"My doctor told me that she got it," she said.

"That was pretty much enough for me. And I work in a nursing home, so everybody there is getting it to try to protect as many people as possible."

She said she's confident it will help protect her from the pandemic flu.

"I'm glad that I'm getting it done," she said.

"It's a precaution. I think everybody should get it."

Julie Martin travelled to the capital city from Moncton to get the vaccine Friday afternoon.

She said she wanted to protect herself from the virus as soon as possible.

"I drove down because I wanted to come today, to have it right away," she said. "I'm really happy (that I'm going to get it)."

Martin, who is 36 weeks into her pregnancy, said her husband works in the medical field, so she was concerned that she could be exposed to the virus through his work with the public.

"My husband sees like 120 patients a day, and they're all kids between 10-20 years old, so he's always in contact with (germs)," she said.

"They all have (symptoms) right now, or their brother or sister has it, so I wanted to protect myself."
