
Team Atlantic out of medal contention

SURREY, B.C. - Team Atlantic lost its second heartbreaker in as many days Friday to fall out of medal contention at the national women's under-18 hockey championship.
After losing 2-1 to defending champion Ontario Red on Thursday, Team Atlantic lost 4-3 in a shootout to Ontario Blue yesterday.
In the shootout, Kristen Richards and Rylee Smith scored against Atlantic goalie Carmen MacDonald of Pictou, N.S., while Ontario keeper stopped Sarah Davis of Paradise, N.L., and Blayre Turnbull of Stellarton, N.S.
Amanda Lucky and Melanie Desrochers, on the power play, staked Ontario Blue to a 2-0 lead 3:17 into the second, but Atlantic got back in it 13 seconds after the Desrochers goal on an unassisted tally by Jenna Pitts of Antigonish, N.S.
Atlantic tied it at 11:43 of the second on a PP goal by Alex Normore of Bedford, N.S., assisted by Kara Power of New Glasgow, N.S. and Alexis Crossley of Cole Harbour, N.S.
Davis gave Atlantic a 3-2 lead 54 seconds into the third period after being set up by Sarah MacDonnell of Quispamsis. Ontario Blue tied it just 69 seconds later, though, on a goal by Danielle Gagne.
Team Atlantic, which opened the tourney with a 6-1 win over Saskatchewan on Wednesday, was outshot 42-33 by Ontario Blue.
MacDonnell is one of five New Brunswickers on the team. The others are Jessica McCann of Saint John, Anissa Gamble and Shelby Lyons of Fredericton and Leanne Gallant of Newbridge.
Team Atlantic will play a placement game today.
High school boys
The Leo Hayes Dairy Queen Lions are off to a 2-0 start at the Miramichi Fall Classic high school boys hockey tournament.
The Lions blanked Ecole Marie-Esther of Shippagan 6-0 thanks to two goals and an assist by Josh Saunders and a goal apiece by Cody Bell, Kyle Crawford, Jim Keilty and Matt Carter. Matt Dacres recorded the shutout.
Crawford had a goal and an assist to lead the Lions to a 3-1 win over Bathurst High. Brandon Ferris and Keilty also scored. Jamie Sherrart broke Andrew Mason's shutout bid in the third period.
The Lions, who led 2-0 after two periods, complete the round robin at 2 p.m. today against Dalhousie High.
N.B.-P.E.I. midget AAA
The Fredericton Darcy Simon Canadiens, off to a 2-7 start in the N.B.-P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League, travel to Saint John today to play the 7-0 Vito's.
The Habs return home to take on the 5-4 Moncton Flyers at 3 p.m. Sunday at Willie O'Ree Place. Saint John was scheduled to play the Cornwall Thunder on the island last night, but that game was postponed due to the closure of the Confederation Bridge to high winds.
N.B. midget AAA
The Moncton Hawks beat the Fredericton A.L. Gullison Disaster Kleenup Caps 4-1 Friday night at the 4-Ice Centre in Moncton, padding their lead atop the New Brunswick Midget AAA Hockey League in the process.
The Hawks improve to 5-0-2 for 12 points, three more than the Caps, who visit the Saint John Phantoms tonight before hosting the West Kent Aces at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Aitken Centre.
Kyle Kostynski scored twice to back goaltender Niall MacKinnon, who stopped 31 of 32 shots. David Ross and Evan Collette also scored for Moncton against Josh LeBrun, who made 23 saves.
Alex Matte snapped MacKinnon's shutout bid in the final four minutes, with assists going to Colin Moore and Ryan Cain.
Maritime junior A hockey
The Woodstock Slammers (14-0-0-1) defeated the Miramichi Timberwolves (10-7-0-0) 4-1 Friday night in Woodstock. Andrew Langan led the Slammers with two goals and an assist while Brogan Bailey added a goal and an assist.
Graham Dyck opened the scoring at 8:41 to give the Timberwolves a 1-0 lead after the first period. Bailey, on the PP, scored at 13:49 to tie the game at 1-1 after the second period. Langan notched the game winner just 13 seconds into the third period to give the Slammers the lead, then Michael Best tallied at 11:28 for a 3-1 cushion, Langan, on the PP, completed the scoring at 14:40.
Woodstock went 2-for-4 on the power play while Miramichi went 0-for4.
Andre Guay stopped 23 of 24 shots for the win while Luke Gallant (51:28) stopped 27 of 30 shots being relieved by Jonathan MacKinnon, who stopped five of six shots the rest of the way.
The Slammers visit the Truro Bearcats tonight. The Bearcats lost 4-3 to the Ramblers in Amherst last night.
