Razed: Members of the Doaktown Fire Department battled a blaze early Monday morning in Blissfield near Doaktown.

A passing motorist reported smoke coming from the building around 6 a.m.

Within five minutes, members of the Doaktown Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene, and the Upper Miramichi Fire Department was called to provide backup.

"The whole building was puffing black smoke with no visible flames when we arrived," said Doaktown fire Chief Scott Stewart.

"We tried an interior attack, but the heat and flames were too intense. Once the fire got into the back wall and roof, it got away from us."

The building was the former Saint George's United Church, which was located in another area of Blissfield.

Several years ago, the church was moved to its current site, renovated and became Billy Bob's Bar, which closed a number of years ago.

Miramichi Valley Composites Inc., which manufactures fibreglass products, was renting the facility.

"We lost everything in the fire," said business owner John Morrison.

"Regardless, I would like to thank the local fire departments for their efforts, even though they weren't successful."

The building is owned by Darlene Bamford.

This was the second fire in a week in the Doaktown area.

On Nov. 2, another early morning blaze destroyed an unoccupied home at 199 Main St. in Doaktown.

The cause of both fires are unknown and under investigation by District 6 RCMP.
