
Blue Devils sweep to tourney title

High school hoops | FHS Varsity girls win Miramichi tourney over Woodstock

The Stanley Blue Devils went a perfect 3-0 to win the Harvey Lady Lakers Invitational Basketball Tournament Saturday. The Blue Devils beat Caledonia 64-51 and host Harvey 71-58 in the continuation of play Saturday after opening up with a win over Dalhousie Condors Friday.
In the win over Caledonia, the Blue Devils broke a 21-21 halftime deadlock to pull away in the second half. Alison Bartlett struck for 20 points to lead the way. Elisa MacKinnon tossed in 15 and Jacee Thomas put up 10 more for the winners. Hillary Hopper had 14 and Laura Jonah 10 for Caledonia.
Stanley got 20 from Shannon MacFarlane and 10 from Elisa MacKinnon in the win over Harvey. Brittany Caissie had 16 in a losing cause for the Lakers, who went 0-3 in the tourney, including a 59-52 loss to Dalhousie Condors earlier in the day. Amelia Fletcher had 17 and Brittany Caissie 13 for the Lakers in that game, which they led 33-27 at the half. The other game Saturday saw Dalhousie beat Caledonia 73-57. Stanley won the tourney with a 3-0 mark, Dalhousie was second at 2-1, Caledonia third at 1-2 and Harvey 0-3.
Devon Park Invitational
Harbourview Vikings of Saint John won the Devon Park Senior Girls invitational tournament, pulling away in the fourth quarter to post a 68-57 win. Kaylee Kilpatrick had 25 points and Rachelle Fulton had 14 to key the victory. Brittany Gilliss had 30 points and Leandra Upton had 12. The teams met earlier in the tourney and Devon Park came away with a 78-75 win. Gilliss had 40 points for the Eagles in that win. Upton added 13 and Maggie Bishop had 12. Emily Thomas had 32 for Harbourview.
Gilliss had 32 points in a 48-36 win over JMA Armstrong of Salisbury and picked up 33, with teammate Maggie Bishop adding 30, in a 79-62 win over Tobique Valley in earlier tournament action.
Junior Varsity
Girls AAA
Leo Hayes Junior Varsity Lions won a pair of games at the Sussex Regional High School girls junior varsity tipoff tournament Saturday. The Lions defeated Bernice MacNaughton Highlanders of Moncton 75-47 and followed up with a 97-24 win over host Sussex in a pair of games Saturday.
In the opener, Caitey Rowe had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Lions. Emma Corey chipped in with 10 points. Emma Billings had eight rebounds and four assists to help out. Tess McNally had 15 points in a losing cause for MacNaughton.
In their second game, Grace Loten collected 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lions, who led 52-11 at halftime. Morgan Hornibrook tossed in 14 points, while Katie Stewart and Caity Rowe each added 12 points. Stewart had five assists as well. Ellen Sharpe led Sussex with seven points.
FHS 74 Dartmouth 70
Victoria Matthews struck for 18 points and Molly Willis and Maddie Melanson each added 14 as the FHS Lady Black Kats JV squad posted an exhibition win over Dartmouth High in a two game swing to the Halifax area. Hannah Slegar had 21 for Dartmouth. Lady Kats led 33-24 at the half.
Citadel 57 FHS 48
Citadel of Halifax opened a 36-23 halftime lead and the Kats couldn't dig out. Laura Kaye and Cassandra Parsons each had 10 in a losing cause. Kats open their Western Conference schedule Wednesday night in Oromocto against the Blues.
Varsity Girls AAA
The Fredericton High School Lady Black Kats defeated the Woodstock High Thunder 55-48 to claim the championship at the Miramichi Valley/James M. Hill tournament in Miramichi Saturday. Olivia Dobbelsteyn clicked for 12 points, Emily Hazlett added 11 and Colleen Barry put up nine to lift the Kats to victory. Samantha Wilson had 21 points and MacKenzie Gray added 13 in a losing cause for Woodstock. FHS won their way to the final with a 73-47 victory over the Sussex High Sonics. Dobbelsteyn had 18, Hazlett contributed 16, and Amy Appleby and Colleen Barry added 11 each for the winners. Brittany Mallory had 16 and Madeline Belding 10 for the Sonics.
Leo Hayes 72 Carleton North 60
Rhiainn Coulombe clicked for 21 points, Taylor Allen added 16 and Olivia Sorensen rang up 13 points as the Leo Hayes 1 Stop Countertops Lady Lions got by the Stars. Tamara Tompkins had 21 ponts and Riley MacIntosh added 13 for the Stars, who trailed 37-31 at the break.
Junior Varsity Boys
Oromocto 73 Harvey 65
Michael Hillier, Kaleb Paget, Mark Neadow and Drake Porrell all had 12 points as the balanced Blues battled back from a 37-36 halftime deficit to register the win. Brett Holt and Alex Murphy each had 15 and Jesse Little added another dozen in a losing cause for Harvey.
Varsity Boys AA
Devon Park 76 McAdam 67 (OT)
The teams were tied 32-32 at halftime and 58-58 at the end of regulation before the Eagles rallied in overtime. Sung Joo Ann led the way for Devon Park with 27 points. Brandon Meikle added 18 and Joel Bishop tossed in 11 more for the winners. Brandon Moffitt had 22, Matthew Carmichael chipped in 18 and Andrew McGillicuddy 10 for the Warriors.
Hartland 61 St. Mary's Academy 59
Adam Harrington and Kyle Kinney each clicked for 10 points to help spark Hartland and nullify 26 points by Joshua Bosse and 14 by Billy Cleland in a losing cause for St. Mary's
