The Queen street branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, which sustained $80,000 worth of flood damage, now believes it's a victim of something else: fraud.

Legion members have been tipped off to the fact that somebody has been calling Fredericton residents posing as legion representatives, asking for financial donations to help with flood damages.

The person requests a donation and then arranges to come pick up the money. Police don't know if anyone has given money.

"I'm so disapointed that somebody would try to take advantage of something like this," said Lions Club president Ardith Armstrong. "To take a tragedy like this and try to use it for personal gain is just horrible."

Although the legion plans to eventually do some fundraising to pay for the damages, Armstrong says it won't be over the phone.

"We will be hosting fundraising activities and sending out a letter to our members once we are back up in operation, but right now we are closed," she said. "We certainly won;t ever be solicitating donations over the phone."

If you have any information regarding this crime contact the Fredericton police at 460-2300 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
