Grits didn't provide enough flood warning, Opposition charges

New Brunswick's Opposition leader says the provincial government didn't do enough to warn some communities in advance of the flooding of the St. John River.

Jeannot Volpe made the accusations in the legislature Tuesday.

He said the warning process must be improved to ensure communities in the upper reaches of the river get the same advance warning as those further downstream.

Premier Shawn Graham says Volpe's comments are an attack on public servants who have worked hard in recent weeks to respond to the flooding crisis. He said flood warnings were given well in advance, but no one predicted the severity of the heavy rainfall that caused flash flood conditions in the north of the province.
