Lakers finish 2-1 in Harvey tourney
Host Harvey High Lakers finished 2-1 and second to unbeaten Caledonia, 3-0, at the Blacks Harvey PharmaChoice Lady Lakers girls high school basketball invitational held Friday and Saturday. In Saturday's final two games, Harvey defeated Bathurst 49-47 as Amelia Fletcher led the way with 19 points. Brittany Caissie added 17 points. Taylor MacDonald had 20 points for Bathurst with Madison Doucet adding 12. Harvey led 21-20 at the half. Caledonia hammered Nackawic 77-29 in the other game. Hillary Hooper had 15 points to pace the winners.
Leo Hayes hoopsters split in girls hoops
Teams from Leo Hayes High and St. Malachy's of Saint John split in exhibition girls basketball action. In the junior girls game, St. Mac's defeated Leo Hayes 59-57 as Maddie Peters led the winners with 18 points. Katelynn Guimond added 14. Jayden McLaughlin led Leo Hayes with 19 points. In the sr. girls game, Leo Hayes posted a 60-39 victory behind Christian Hines 11 points. Rhianne Coulombe added 10. Leanne Davis led St. Malachy's with 12 points. The Leo Hayes boys team lost 72-70 to Odyssee of Moncton. Nash Zangio led the winners with 16 points. Richie Wilkins had 16 points for Leo Hayes with Peter Reimer adding 12.
Oromocto finishes 4th at Simonds tourney
Oromocto High School Blues lost each of their three games in the junior boys AAA division at the Simonds High Tip-Off basketball tournamemt held on the weekend.
Losses were 46-28 to Simonds High, 50-45 to Harbour View of Saint John and 81-30 to St. Malachy's High Saints. Mitchell Hamilton led Simonds with 14 points. Mitch McCoy had 10 for OHS. Keven Steeves led Harbour View with 10 points. McCoy was again OHS's top point-getter with 13 points. In the loss to St. Mac's, McCoy had 15 points. Eric Rodriquez had 16 for St. Malachy's. In the final, St. Mac's defeated Simonds 59-38. McCoy was a tourney all-star. In the senior boys final, St. Mac's defeated Simonds 70-66. OHS didn't have a team in this section.
Successful finish for Harvey hoops boys
Harvey High Lakers completed a three-game trek to eastern N.B. with a 72-71 loss to J.M. Armstrong of Salisbury and a 63-53 win over Petitcodiac on the weekend. Harvey had opened up the tour with a win over Caledonia. In the win over Petitcodiac, Harvey led 37-28 at the half. Chad McCann led the winners with 16 points while Gordon Robinson added 11. Phil Carson had 19 points for Petitcodiac with Eli McMackin adding 10 more. Against JMA, the Lakers trailed 36-30 at the half and couldn't close the gap. Dustin Caissie led the winners with 29 points while Justin Hicks added 24. McCann led Harvey with 24 points while Shaun Williams added 19 and Robinson 12. Harvey plays Smanuel de Champlain in its first south conference AA game Tuesday in Saint John.
W'stock, MacNaughton split hoop games
Teams from Woodstock High and Bernice MacNaughton of Moncton split a pair of exhibition basketball games in Woodstock. The Woodstock boys defeated MacNaughton 83-62 after leading 45-40 at the half. Joel Everett had 32 points for the Thunder with Scott Anderson adding 15 and Jordan Irvine 13. Devon McLean and James Hicks each had 14 for the Highlanders. It was MacNaughton winning the girls game 71-43 with Samantha Kaminsky scoring 13 points to lead the way. Samantha Wilson had 17 points in a losing cause.
Bantam Kats earn silver at hoop tourney
Fredericton YMCA bantam boys basketball Kats earned the silver medal at the Moncton Hawks Tip-Off tournament held in Moncton on the weekend. The Kats lost a hard fought 59-46 decision to the St. Margarets Bay Slammers of Halifax in the tourney final. Ben Cripps was player of the game for the Kats. Enroute to earning their final berth, the Kats defeated Lancaster 64-34, Kennebecasis Valley Slammers 59-48 and host Moncton 48-45 in semifinal action. This weekend, the Kats make the trek to Saint John to face Lancaster and Kennebecasis Valley.
Northside B Lions record hoop wins
Northside Lions B team won a pair of middle school Grade 7-8 girls basketball games Saturday at Nashwaaksis Middle School. In the first game, Sara Ripley had nine points as the Lions beat Miramichi Rockets 30-19. Hayley Johnston Allison Keane added six and five points respectively. Sabrina McDonald led Miramichi with eight points. Lions also beat Harvey Lakers 44-26 as Tori Theriault led the way with nine points and Johnston and Ripley each added six. Lauren Hallihan had five. Abbey Donnelly and Emily Robinson led Harvey with eight. Harvey defeated Miramichi 41-24 with Courtney Boyne and Robinson each scoring 10 points to pace the winners. Brittany Seaborn had eight points for Miramichi.
Local swimmers excel at N.B. sync swim meet
The 28 swimmers competing on behalf of the Fredericton Sychronized Swim Club had plenty of success at the provincial synchronized swimming championships held in Saint John. Local swimmers won in several age categories including Julie MacFarlane finishing first in the tier 6 (16 and over) category. Josee Thomas was first in the tier 5 while Chelsea Charleson won the tier 3 event. Madison Ames was first in the tier 2 category. Other Fredericton swimmers in the tier 6 included: Alissa Roy (2nd), Emily McKim (3rd), Monica Maillet (5th), Hilary Byrne (6th), Sarah Heffernan (8th) and Ceara Hutchinson (9th). Veronique Roy was third in the 15 and under. In the tier 5, local swimmers included Leah Smal (3rd), Adele Gaudet (4th) and Gabrielle Pearson (7th). In tier 2, other Fredericton swimmers were Rebecca Richard (4th), Megan McGuigan (5th), Lauren Stennick (6th), Hannah Cameron (7th), Gabrielle Verner (8th) and Megan Hill (9th). Swimmers in tier 1 were Leighen Lyons (3rd), Jaiden Regnier and Martha Moore (tied for 4th), Sophie Gorman (6th), Elizabeth Allen (7th), Cedeste Gaudet (10th), Sydney Charleson (14th) and Emalee Piercy (15th).
