Hats off to hockey star
City councillors and Mayor Brad Woodside saluted local goalie Jake Allen for his gold medal as Team Canada's goalie in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Hockey Championships held in Russia recently.
"Fredericton was very honoured to have such a fine young gentleman not only representing our city but our country in the gold medal game against Russia," said Woodside.
"You can be certain that your efforts have not gone unnoticed by your peers. Your family must be extremely proud."
Union, Cliffe streets upgrading planned
Monteith Underground Service Ltd. has been awarded a contract for $421,038 to upgrade Cliffe and Union streets near the intersection of St. Mary's and Bowlen streets.
It's the first phase of work being done by the city with Department of Transportation assistance.
Tenders approved
City council has approved a storm sewer renewal project on Spruce Terrace.
Philson Ltd. was low bidder at $129,827.
Storm sewers will be replaced at Morrison and Allen streets. Fairville Construction Ltd. will do that work for $157,917. Hazen Thomas and Sons Contracting Ltd. will undertake culvert replacement and an upgrade of Forest Hill Road for a price of $237,627.
McCarthy's Roofing Ltd. was low bidder at $33,800 to replace the roof of Fredericton's indoor pool. Hogan Paving Ltd. won the contract at $94,951 to repave Marysville's tennis courts. Portions of Nashwaak trail and the northside trail will be paved by Hogan Paving Ltd. at a price of $40,832.
Two-year security contract awarded
Perpetual Security Corporation has been awarded a two-year contract to patrol city buildings, including Fredericton Square and Brunswick Street parking garages, and to monitor the city's pay-by-space parking machines. The firm will receive $3.79 per patrol plus HST until April 30, 2009. The rate increases at set intervals to $4.61 and to $4.93 per patrol by the end of April 30, 2010. Value of the contract is estimated to be $53,083.
Library getting new furniture
Fabinex Inc. has received a contract worth $66,500 to manufacture cabinets for the Fredericton Public Library. The company will build a new circulation desk which will accommodate computers, and storage for DVDs and CDs.
Pastor bids adieu
Pastor Joe Beesley, chaplain to Fredericton city council, has completed his four-year term.
Mayor Brad Woodside thanked the local minister for comforting and supporting council and city staff and for making time in his busy schedule to deliver the opening prayer at council sessions.
