Remains found in woods near Moncton that of a porpoise, not a dog left to die

MONCTON - Turns out Rover's OK. Flipper, not so much.
Skeletal remains found by hunters in a cage in the woods last weekend are that of a porpoise and not a dog as initially believed.
Naturalist Mary Majka said Friday she found the porpoise carcass in the Shepody River and placed it in the cage so it would decompose into a skeleton for the New Brunswick Museum.
"It's going to be a museum specimen," she said.
Two hunters stumbled across the remains last weekend and told the Moncton Times and Transcript this week that they thought they were that of a dog someone had left to die.
But Majka said she and her son, David Christie, a former curator at the New Brunswick Museum, placed the carcass in the cage to keep scavengers away while it decomposed.
The newspaper story angered many readers, including one who was in tears when she called Majka to talk about it Thursday.
"Some people have gotten very upset about it," she said. "But it was us who left it there."
