Groups honoured for workplace diversity
Published Wednesday February 24th, 2010

The Multicultural Association of Fredericton recognized local businesses Tuesday at its annual employer appreciation night.
Representatives from local companies, non-profit organizations and all three levels of government were invited to attend the event at the New Maryland Centre.
Bonnie Doughty, employment co-ordinator for the association, said the evening was an opportunity to celebrate employers who have helped new Canadian residents overcome obstacles and find jobs in Fredericton.
"This is our second annual event to recognize employers that have practised diversity in the workforce," Doughty said. "It's something we've wanted to do for years."
Over the course of the evening, a number of awards were given out recognizing large businesses, small businesses and individuals for their dedication to creating diverse workplaces, participating in community projects and helping newcomers work and settle in Fredericton.
Doughty said the association has assisted more than 600 clients over the past year - 100 more than the year before.
She said the association offers services for both newcomers and employers, from cultural competency training for employers to international students and spouses employment services to assist international students and their families.
Jonathan Duncan, delivery manager for PQA in Fredericton, has been involved with the association for about a year.
"We're always looking for the best employees out there," Duncan said. "MCAF is one of the sources that gives us access to those people"
Duncan said he has enjoyed his experience working with the group.
"I've been involved with the MCAF mentorship program," he said. "A number of people from the area are involved in helping people acclimatize to North American culture."
Duncan said he was pleased to be able to attend the employer appreciation night.
"I think it's great. It's nice to see people be recognized for contributing to the world on a day to day basis."
