Ex-FHSer runs new personal best

Former Fredericton High School cross country star Chris Brannon, now in his sophomore season at Georgia State University in Atlanta, set a new personal best in the 5000 meters at a meet at Florida State University Friday.

Brannon finished seventh in a field of 37 runners, knocking 25 seconds off his previous personal best time in the five kilometers,, to 14 minutes, 52.98 seconds. The next meet on his schedule is the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech, where he'll run the 1500 meters.

FHS JV volleyballers win tourney title

The Freericton High School junior varsity Lady Black Kats captured the championship at an 11-team provincial girls volleyball tournament at FHS Saturday, defeating Nepisiquit High of Bathurst 2-1 in the best of three final match. Set scores were 25-23, 15-25, 15-5, with Maria Hartly of the Kats winning team MVP honors. The Kats finished at the top of their pool with a 6-0 record, swept Thomas Albert of Grand Falls 2-0 in the quartefinals and then beat crosstown rival Leo Hayes Lions in straight sets. That put them into the final against Nepisiquit, with strong serves and hard hits at the net the key to the win.

McManus brothers earn judo gold

Brothers James and Shawn McManus, two of the 10 representatives of the Fredericton/UNB Judo Club competing at the Atlantic Judo championships in Charlottetown this past weekend, each brought home gold.

James earned gold in the 100-kilogram plus senior division and Shawn did likewise in the 73 kilo category, each winning their matches decisively. Five other wrestlers also earned medals, with Jordan McManus capturing silver in the 100 kilo plus senior category, Pat Price silver in the juvenile 73 kilo class, and Andy Ouellette in the 100 kilo plus junior division. Laura Mansfield and Matt Ouellette each took bronze in their ccategories as well. The other competitors from the Fredericton/UNB club, Viki Oellette, Andrew Brooks and Lukas Nowak, finished out of the medals. The Canadian juvenile, junior and senior national tournaments take place later this spring in Quebec.

Peewee AA Sabres capture district crown

The Fredericton Canadian Tire Sabres completed a sweep of the best-of-three final with an 8-2 victory over the York North Coyotes Saturday, winning the District championship in the process. Mark Blinn scored six goals and set up another to lead the Saturday victory, with Steph Blinn and Matt Richard each scoring one goal and assisting on two others. Ryan Foley picked up the win between the pipes.

The sweep was the capper in a 20-2 season for the Sabres overall, including one tournament banner.

Swimmer sets third record in three days

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands - Alain Bernard broke the world record in the 50-metre freestyle Sunday for his third world mark in three days at the European swimming championships.

The Frenchman swam 21.50 seconds to beat the time of 21.56 set last month by Eamon Sullivan of Australia, who lowered Alexander Popov's previous record of 21.64 set in Moscow on June 16, 2000.
