
Sked set as Lady Lions aim to defend crown


The field has been set for the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association girls AAA high school hockey championship, to be hosted by the reigning champion Leo Hayes McMinniman Moving and Storage Lady Lions March 28-30.
Willie O'Ree Place is the site of the six-team tournament, with the Lions and cross-town rival Fredericton High School DQ Lady Black Kats in opposite three-team divisions, setting up the possibility of an intercity showdown for the provincial championship.
The AAA girl's tournament will be hosted by Leo Hayes High School March 28-30. The tournament format will consist of two divisions made up of three teams each. The two top teams in each division will cross over to meet in semifinals, with the winners advancing to the noon hour championship game Sunday.
The Lions are grouped in with Louis J. Robichaud Patriotes of Shediac and the Nepisiquit Nordics of Bathurst. FHS, Mathieu Martin Vedettes of Dieppe and Harbour View Vikings of Saint John are in the other section.
Harbour View and Nepisiguit were promoted to the tournament on wild card selections by a panel consisting of the four regional four league presidents and high school hockey commissioner Leroy Washburn.
Play will open Friday with Leo Hayes facing LJR at 1:15 p.m. FHS will make their tourney debut at 3:15 against Mathieu Martin. The night shift starts at 6:30 p.m. with Nepisiquit to will face the loser of the 1:15 game. Harbour View will meet the loser of the 3:15 game at 8:30 p.m.
The winners Friday afternoon get the night off, returning to the twin rinks at Willie O'Ree Place Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against Nepisiquit and Harbour View, respectively.
Cross over semifinals, with the first place team in one division taking on the second place finisher in other, go at 6 p.m. and eight o'clock Saturday night, with the winners advancing to Sunday's final.
While the Lady Lions are on home ice defending the women's championship, the DQ Lions men's team will be in Hampton trying to bring back a banner.
The Lions are in a division with Louis J. Robichaud of Shediac and wild card entry W.A. Losier of Tracadie-Sheila.
Host Hampton Huskies, Cites des Jeunes Republicans of Edmundston and Clement Cormier Cavaliers of Buctouche make up the other three-team section.
The boy's AAA schedule has yet to be officially settled.
The respective boys and girls AA provincial titles are also up for grabs this weekend. Carleton North Stars of Bristol host the boys AA tourney at the Northern Carleton Civic Centre. The Stars, Rothesay-Netherwood Riverhawks and Ecole Marie Esther of Shippegan are set in one group while Thomas Albert Richilieu Elite of Grand Falls, Aux Quatre Vents Cyclones of Dalhousie and Rothesay High Red Hawks are the others.
Woodstock's Carleton Civic Centre is the site of the girls AA title tournament. The host Thunder welcome Dalhousie High Condors and Rothesay-Netherwood Riverhawks in one division while A.J. Savoie of Saint Quentin, Roland-Pepin of Campbellton and Ecole Marie-Esther make up the other division.
As in the AAA tournaments, teams play a round robin within their own division, with the top two teams in each division advancing to crossover semifinals. Winners advance to the Sunday finals.
