Sea Dogs open up 2-0 lead

The Saint John Sea Dogs took a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven QMJHL Eastern Division playoff series with a convincing 7-3 win over the visiting Prince Edward Island Rocket Saturday. Ryan Sparling notched a pair of goals for the Sea Dogs while Scott Howes, Chris Di Domenico, Alexandre Picard, Keven Charland and Payton Liske had one goal apiece. Geoff Walker, Matthew Lachaine and Brad Gallant replied for P.E.I.

A pair of Fredericton hockey products are involved in the series, with Mike Thomas playing for the Sea Dogs and Lucas McKinley playing for the Rocket. The former Midget AAA teammates are each in their second season with their respective clubs.

T'Wolves get by Slammers in opener

Paul Ross scored the goal that stood as the game winner 16 secons into the third period to lift the Miramichi Timberwolves to a 3-2 victory in the opening game of the best-of-seven Maritime Junior A Hockey League Meek Division final Saturday in Miramichi.

Kyle Moje opened the scoring for the Slammers with the only goal of the first period, on the power play, but Dylan Bellmore and Adam Ross scored unassisted goals for the Timberwolves 1:23 apart late in the second period to give them a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes, and Ross connected with another unassisted tally before the Slammers could get their bearings in the third. Kyle Chagnon scored at 9:40 of the third to cut the deficit but the Slammers couldn't tie it up. Evan Mosher picked up the win in nets, stopping 38 of 40 shots, while Ben MacFarlane turned aside 30 of 33 shots in the Woodstock net. The second game of the series comes up tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Woodstock's Carleton Civic Centre.

Thrashers close in on Southern crown

The Grand Lake Thrashers moved to within one game of a successful defence of their Southern Hockey League championship with a 3-2 overtime win over the Blacks Harbour Silverkings in Saint John Sunday.

Kyle Werner scored at 8:21 of the first overtime period. Saturday, they posted a 6-2 victory over the Blacks Harbour Silverkings in Blacks Harbour Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Southern Hockey League final series. Ryan Burgoyne scored a pair of goals to lead the way while Jeff Wilson, Brad Englehart, Kyle Werner and Mario Cormier added the others. Deke Cheney and Jonathan Lomax replied for the Silverkings.

Werner added three assists along with his goal as the Thrashers broke out to a 3-0 lead after one period and led 5-2 through 40 minutes.
