Difficult times for local soccer teams
Fredericton teams competing at each of the U16 boys and girls and U18 boys national tournaments all had losing efforts in Sunday action. The U18 Canadian Tire Caps finished 0-3-1 after losing 3-0 to Winsloe, P.E.I. in Vaughan, Ont. yesterday. The tie was 1-1 against Newfoundland with losses to Quebec 3-0 and Halifax United 2-0. At the Adidas Cup U16 tourney in Sydney, N.S., the FDSA Clark Toyota Caps U16 girls lost 3-0 to Dartmouth yesterday. Earlier, FDSA tied Yellowknife 0-0 after losing 2-0 to Manitoba and 2-0 to Ontario. Today, they play Newfoundland in the 11th place game. The U16 boys Caps didn't fare any better, losing 5-0 to Saskatchewan yesterday. Saturday, the Caps defeated Cape Breton Selects 4-0 with Victor Karosan scoring two and singles to David Jamael and Brett Stillwell. Earlier losses were 2-0 to Saskatchwan and 4-0 to Alberta.
St. Malachy's, EGR cop NBIAA softball titles
It was St. Malachy's High of Saint John defeating Saint John High 3-0 in the AAA final of the provincial high school girls softball championship at Prospect St. Park Saturday. In semifinal play, St. Malachy's beat Mathieu Martin of Dieppe 9-4 and Saint John got past Ecole Marie-Esther 13-4. Winning the AA title was Ecole Grande-Riviere defeating Upper Miramichi Regional High of Boiestown 5-0 in the final. EGR routed Bonar Law of Rexton 30-1 in one semifinal with Upper Miramichi blasting Southern Victoria 13-1 in the other semi.
NMBA offering girls skills, drills camp
The Northside Minor Basketball Association is offering a nine-week skills and drills camp for girls in Grades 4,5 and 6 beginning Oct. 19 from 6-7:30 at Leo Hayes High School. Cost is $50 and pre-registration is not necessary. Guest coaches from the community will make up the instructional team. STU passes on sale at O'Keefe Centre
All-sports season passes covering men's and women's hockey, basketball and volleyball home games at St. Thomas University this season are available at the J.B. O'Keefe Fitness Centre. Nackawic High names top athletes of month
Earning the nod as Valley Graphics male and female athlete for the month of September at Nackawic High School were Hillary McGuire and Brandon Bradley. Both are Grade 11 students who excel in soccer.
